Who knows? I just have a gut feeling that no matter who starts and #1 next year...the backup will likley have taken over by season's end (as is the pattern). I would say in this case, find some goalie that can weather about 60 or so games without us bottoming out in the standings, then put Crawford in for the last 20 or so.

I don't know what happened to Crawford this season. From last year in front of Turco, he was tremendous. This year however, he looks like our Frenchman Huet. Will stop a great shot...then let one just float by from center ice.

He needs to get out of this slump...find out what he is truly playing for and commit to the Indian!

softmore slump? He is after all only in his 2nd year. You can say the same about many goalies. Craig Anderson comes to mind.

I know it's his second full year, but I remember seeing Crow I swear before the lockout. Am I imagining things?

Maybe it was the year after the lockout.

Either way.

I can't argue about the cap hit. If he plays a bit smarter, it will be a great deal for the Hawks. I am not asking for a choir boy out there, I don't mind a player sticking up for himself or other players, just be smart about it. Know your limitations, and know that because your name is Carcillo, they are gonna be watching you with a magnifying glass.

Niemi is slumping even worse lately, you know, that one guy everyone wants back... Crawford hasn't been terrible this year, he has been inconsistent, something a lot of young goalies struggle with.

the guy I am not sold on is Crawford, I just think he is very much like Lou where you can get in his head very easily. I don't think its his soph. slump like many suggest. I think this is what to expect again thats just me seeing it. I really don't like that signing they should have waited for this year to end and not jump on it after last years playoffs when no one really new much about him. We shall see next year, and if he is playing like he is this year, will he be gone by trade deadline???

they tried to get in his head last year in the playoffs, and he outplayed both Lou and Schnieder.

It's a bad sophmore year. Everyone has them.

I think you're thinking of Munroe.

Crow did play a game here and there though.

Even more dramatic was Mason in Columbus. People were just raving about him his rookie year. Crawford has had some good stretches this year especially early in the year. I still think he can be good.

Cam Ward has had his struggles as well in his first three years. MA Fleury, Kiprusoff, Lehtonen, Miller, M. Smith, Price... the list goes on and on. Just off the top of my head, all those guys have had their struggles early in their careers. Not to mention the best goalie in the NHL, Tim Thomas taking quite the road to success.

Very few goalies out there have had consistency through their careers. Lundqvist and Quick are the only two I can think of that haven't ever had an off-year.

Nothing wrong with the contract, but why now? I don't get it. Hawks don't even know how well he will recover from the pretty serious knee injury that he sustained. Wouldn't it be better to extend him closer to the FA period, when you have an idea how he is progressing from the injury? Truly strange...

B. Morrison had a very similar knee injury and has never been the same since. Seems like the Hawks are taking a risk here.

For the price, I don't really see it as a big risk. At least not a $3.125 or $5.625 million dollar risk. Might as well get it out of the way now because after the playoffs the Hawks have at least 5-6 contracts to extend if not more.

Crawford's first game was in relief of Khabi, the year after the lock out.

I remember when he started against the defending stanley cup champs the ducks and blanked them.

I hope it is a sophomore slump and he isnt a one year wonder a la Steve Mason.

I think that was his first full game as a Hawk. Shut them out 4-0 at the UC I believe.

Pez I agree, the question is why now? Like someone was going to give him over a mil anyway. Don't get it, although I don't care either way.

Crow has been with us a long time and played a couple games in 2005-06 and I remember he got into the debacle game 4 of the 2009 WCF where the refs called a penalty on us while we were in the dressing room between periods to help ensure the Pens Wings rematch. (Habby was hurt in game 3 and Huet was being Puet.)

Corey has had times when he has had his save percent go up when he moves from the AHL to the NHL which happens with goalies that depend on being in the right system to thrive. I think maybe our defensive breakdowns cost him his confidence this year.

His mechanics have been Godawful this year (Standing back on the goal line shoulders parallel to the goal line on low angle shots especially.)

I would also REALLY like to see Corey give some shorter goal pads a try...his agility is severly hampered by the 14 foot long pads.

that was one game, and he came in halfway through. Munroe was our "man of the future' back in 05 was he not?

Who?

Mayers, Bollig, Oduya and Emery if they keep him.

Rest are minor leagers.

The Following year they have four up..

Kruger, Stalberg, Bickell, Leddy.

I was thinking of the "double rookie shutout" game but I looked it up...that game was farther back: we had Leighton play his first or second game against that Phoenix goalie named Zac Bierke in his first or second game. One of them was playing his very first NHL game and the other was in his 2nd ever I think/ Anyway they both got 65 minute shutouts and neither got a win...hah!

Little did we know at the time that Michael Leighton would blossom into the goalie in net the night we FINALLY won a cup!! (I did not say OUR NET! Grin) And wearing 49 symbolizing the length of our cup drought.

I was including minor-league guys, just sayin if they could get it out of the way now and have more time to focus on Mayers and Oduya (most important IMO) then that's fine with me. Minor-league contracts that expire include Ben Smith, Chris DiDomenico, Igor Makarov, Carter Hutton, Simon Danis-Pepin.... not saying they'll retain all of them but 2 or 3 of them should be re-signed along with Bollig and possibly Emery. Nothing huge but Oduya and Mayers could be a challenge that would be easier with Carcillo out of the way.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
It just seems to me:

This year...Crawford starts at #1--Emery replaces him.

Last year, Turco starts at 1, Crawford replaces him

Year before, Huet starts as 1, Niemi replaces him

Year before, Huet starts as #1, Khabi replaces him

I do think it might be a soph slump as it were. I think Craw, like Niemi, falls under the "good enough" banner. I'm just worried if the trend continues, we could have freaking Lundqvist in net to start the season and he'll be bailed on so bad that we end up with Ken Simpson coming in as backup and all of a sudden the D shows up in front of him and he takes the starting job.
