a year long concussion could be a step backwards though.

Smith is obviously ready. Morin may not be.

Per McKenzie

EDITORS NOTE: Olesz competed in 6 games without a single point, a minus-1 rating, and six penalty minutes. In his NHL career, Rostislav posted 57 goals, 75 assists for 132 points and a minus-10 rating.

This move will free up over $6 million in cap space for the Blackhawks and also opens up a roster spot for the Blackhawks to call up Ben Smith, Brandon Pirri, Jimmy Hayes, or Jeremy Morin.

Look for the Blackhawks to be big players at the deadline. Fire up the Xbox.

Wait, I had to wait until now to fire up the Xbox. Crap.

I said both. I think I'd take Smith first but Id take either over the two mentioned either way.

well obviously. as per what i said earlier, I would put Smith in Stalbergs spot...or even Carcillos.

Smith was ready in the playoffs last year, and he should be on the team. But don't bring him up if he will be playing on the 4th line.

With so many elite players with big cap hits, the key to Hawks future success depends on cap management. That is why Soup had to be traded.

Luckily, the Hawks have Leddy as a replacement. Leddy is developing fast and will probably be an all star, but will never make anything like Soup money. Being able to dump Soup gave the Hawks the ability to acquire and sign the right role players and have good depth, key to a Cup run.

Olesz dumping was expected. At the start of the season you would have thought the future targets (with 7 mill in cap space) was center and a dman. But if Kaner sticks at center, maybe the key targets are atop 6 winger and d man. However, a key injury would dictate a need to fill a hole.

So now we wait and see who becomes available and what teams become sellers. I highly doubt the Hawks target a star or marquee free agent for several reasons. We have the stars, we just need the right role players and depth beyond that. But not the kind that make the league minimum.

Finally, kudos to the front office. A year ago the Hawks had to dump 1/3 of the team and were in cap hell. One year later, Hawks are able to sign free agents and then have 7 mill in cap space. Well done.

btw, Sharp's cap hit this year is 3.9, next year it goes up to 5.9.

Was only a matter of time. Seeing Huet's contract is off the books next season I knew the Hawks would eat up Olesz's contract at some point. This was a money dump from day one..no big secret.

The thing to remember about the Campbell trade is that he has 4 more years after this season at $7.1M. Campbell is a very good player who helped us win the Cup and is having a fine start to the year for Florida - more power to him cuz soupy is a class guy - but it isn't just $7.1M off the books for this year that made the trade a good move for the Hawks to make - IT'S THE NEXT 4 YEARS TOO. There were trade proposals all over the boards where people thought there would need to be a significant sweetener added to any trade proposal in order to offload Campbell's albatros contract. The fact that Stan got rid of that contract without having to give up a top prospect or roster player makes it not only a good move in my books, but a trade he had to make when the opportunity was there.

Ben Smith is a scratch tonight.

I didn't know he was actually called up.....which is dumb since Rockford plays tonight.

Something is brewing, even if it is only Smith being called up. Didn't think Olecz would last and IMO he didn't show us much. I hope some desperate team picks him up.

He was ok. Not sure 3.2 sitting in the press box, with really no place to play on teh team, is wise.

Kuc said just because he clears doesn't mean he'll be sent down. But like BHP said it sets them up for something at the TDL.

Then some dumb **** tweeted Kuc about the Pens trading Crosby.

Some of our fans are just fucking idiots.

Some?????

That "albatros" contract is what started the ball rolling for other UFA's to consider Chicago.

Prior to that a player wouldn't dare peek at an offer from Chicago.

Sure they overpaid (some) to get Campbell here; but he contributed unlike McDonut's signing of Huet.

I thought the talent and the winning is what got the ball rolling.

I stick up for the Campbell signing with other fans try to give me shit about it though. Big expensive contract, won us a cup. Who cares? I'd do it all again!
