A thought I had during our discussion about how we fans should view these wins was I wonder if staying with the Cubs becomes more appealing for Dempster if the team is nominally "in it". That is if this team is hoovering around 500 does refusing to waive his ntc become more appealing than Dempster. A lot of the whispers was that Dempster would waive it despite really want to stay in Chicago out of loyaltly. I'm just wondering aloud if Dempster perhaps becomes a little less willing to go if this team is still somewhat in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Why wouldn't Dempster OK a trade? He is a FA at the end of the season right? Doesnt he increase his value if he performs for a contender. I mean a real contender, not a team that is " still somewhat in the hunt for a playoff spot". Whatever that means...

someone doesnt know what false hope is.

Way to completely miss the point of my post. First off, the question I was raising is in the unlikely scenario this team is hoovering around 500 and mathimatically in play for a playoff spot if that changes Dempster's mind about waiving his ntc. Second of all I don't know how much more I could alert readers to the fact that in that unlikely scenario that I don't really think they would make the playoffs. I put in it in scare quotes. I used the words nominally and somewhat to describe the situation. The point being raised wasn't that it changes my opinion of this tea if they are hanging around 500. It was does it change Dempster's mind and then does the player's mentality of not wanting to bail on his teammates and a good sitauation for his family takeover.

I think for Dempster you could get a 10-15 organizational type prospect for and another one down in the 20 range.

To be honest I think they can get more. How much more depends on how he pitches, what teams make available at the deadline and how willing Dempster is to go. I look at what the Mets got for Beltran last year as a somewhat similar situation. The Mets were able to fleece a pretty desperate Giants team in giving up the 55th ranked prospect. I don't think the Cubs will have the same luck but that is why I think they could get more than a 10-15 guy in an organization with another guy with some upside.

The Yankees/Red Sox are two obvious choices, the Yankees might dance, but I dunno what you can get for him.

Maybe Mason Williams, or Ravel Santana, on the pitching side, perhaps Betances or Campos. Angelo Gumbs, 19 y.o. SS also is intriguing.

My dream scenario with the Red Sox is getting Xander Bogaerts back, that kid is a stud, but if the Cubs dance with them they probably end up with Matt Barnes as the best case scenario.

The Tigers are the other option, and if the Cubs could fleece them for Nick Castellanos, I would be happy. He plays third, and I hope Miggy sticks there to block him.

If the Rockies get close, I can see that too. Ditto Cleveland

The alternative is whether the Cubs can get the compensation pick for Dempster if he hangs on and declines arbitration in the offseason. I don't think that happens because 1) arbitration with compensation carries a $12.5MM offer and 2) he's unlikely to get that much per year from another team and 3) he wants to stay in Chicago.

The best hope is that the Cubs can trade him rather than being forced to make that choice, and more than likely losing him for nothing.

Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson right? Nestor Molina on the pitching side?

This of course assumes that the White Sox have better luck than the Cubs in staying close to the postseason race.
