Jon Heyman

Most of the time Heyman just says stuff to listen to himself talk but in this case I think he's at the upper limit of what I believe the Cubs should offer Garza. Anything more seems like an overpay.

I would have agreed prior to the recent rounds of extensions being signed. The new caps on amateur spending is having the intended effect of funnelling money to major league rosters. The cost of keeping talent has gone up the past six months.

I think most of that is an overreaction to the CBA and the Cubs may be waiting for stabilization before they ink an extension. They also have Garza under contract and under control for yet another year so I doubt they would be as desperate. But you may very well be correct.

The market could swing back, but the lower and middle market teams have more money to spend on big league payrolls than they did prior to the new CBA. I think some inflation is going to occur. It might not be as drastic as we've seen the past few months, but I think it has gone up.

I can imagine a scenario where they just let Garza go year-to-year and try to work out an extension the following season if the demand is a bit crazy. If they offer him arb after his control years are up and he refuses, two draft picks. The Cubs could be in a win-win here...Garza's extension may be more reasonable than we could imagine.

Good news. If they can sign Dempster to a cheaper deal after this year and somehow land Hamels, that's one hell of a rotation for the next few years.

As :homer:ish as that is, I don't think we should be faulted for day dreaming about it. What else do we have to do right now besides watch 4 SPs pitch really well but get no rewards for it?

Oh I agree. It's not really too farfetched IMO. Dempster seems to want to stay a Cub, Samardzija is pitching very well and Garza's contract talks are going well. That's a solid three right there and Hamels has said that he would be open to playing in Chicago. If Theo and co. continue to like what they're seeing and the Phils don't re-sign Cole, I think the Cubs should be a top destination for him.

I have no idea how likely a Hammels extension would be or how likely Hammels would be to sign with the Cubs, but it would seem like a fit for the Cubs given Hammels age entering free agency and the current FO's obsession with acquiring left handed pitching. That said the odds are far greater that Hammels won't be in Chicago to start 2013 than he will be.

Well that seems all kinds of conflicted. The Cubs will only trade Dempster if they sign Garza to an extension. Releasing Soriano isn't an option? The only piece of news that was depressing to read was that Dempster was unlikely to sign a below market deal with the Cubs.

In that case you offer Dempster the bare minimum arbitration deal for acquiring draft pick compensation. If he accepts it, fine. If he doesn't, draft picks.

Yeah I am thinking more and more that Dempster is going to be offered arbitration and that is how we are going to get value for Dempster.

Better sell high on him before he goes back to his career norms.
