There are certainly a lot of teams that could use Ryan Dempster. There might be a situation that makes trading Dempster now more enticing for the Cubs such as Jered Weaver going down for an extended period of time for example. Oswalt being out there complicates matters, but it sounds like he is going to be a lot more expensive in terms of salary than what Dempster will be by the time he is dealt. Given Garza's recent struggles this is the most interesting storyline for the Cubs right now, imo.

Dodgers are strongly in the market for a pitcher (and a hitter). Don't be surprised if they pursue Dempster, who they tried to get in 2010.

Dodgers initially wanted Dempster 2 summers ago, settled for Lilly when Jim Hendry took Dempster off the market.

I need to look up LAD system

The Yankees also have concerns about Ryan Dempster’s ability to transition to the American League

That is the only thing that scares me when it comes to the sox

A guy that I think the Cubs might zero in the Dodgers system is C Tim Federowicz. He is rated the best defensive catcher in the Dodgers system according to BA, and is currently hitting .294/.352/.500. At the beginning of the year he was the tenth rated in a somewhat depleted Dodgers system with a lot of their top prospects from the previous year graduated to the majors or traded. The other reason why I guess the Cubs might focus on him is because he was drafted by the Red Sox four years ago.

My answer to that is pony up for Garza if you are that worried about it

The question is how much of Garza's improvement was a change in approach versus a move to the NL. The past two starts not included Garza has been much better than a number 3 pitcher. I don't know what the answer to that question is, but it is significant.

in the NL he is a 1a/2 for sure even on a good staff. If he goes to NY he will get torched IMO.

Again Garza has been a different pitcher in the NL. Garza was doing some different things since coming to the Cubs. How much of that caused the improvement in Garza's stats is hard to say as opposed to switching to the NL?

Blue Jays are interested according to Rosenthal
One rival executive reports that the Jays are “sniffing all over” Cubs right-hander Matt Garza – a move that would make some sense, considering that Garza is under club control through 2013. But the Jays also have needs in first base and left field, and a long-term question at second base, with Kelly Johnson only on a one-year deal.

To be honest I am not certain that the Cubs best option would be to trade Garza first or take him off the market. Not every team that is interested in Garza would trade for Dempster, but it would seem like the number of teams interested in Dempster woudl go up once Garza is no longer in play.

More about how Dempster is pretty willing to waive his NTC from Bleacher Nation. The Cubs should be able to get some nice pieces for him with the way he is pitching, and depending on who else is on the trade market.
