Under the old CBA I'd agree with you. With this new one, I'm not so sure because we have no idea how GMs will react to it.

Yea this deadline will be very interesting what players are worth.

Good thing is that not many teams be selling cause of 2nd WC

Bad thing teams cant get comp on guys traded for so prolly want to give up less

Beltran who the Giants couldn't get compensation for due to a clause in his contract netted a top 100 prospect last year. It is very unlikely that we will get that good of a haul, but desperate teams do dumb things all the time. The deal for the Cubs though it isn't like they lose Dempster for nothing at the end of the year if no team ponies up. They can offer a qualifying one year deal that would be cheaper than what he is making this year. So either they get Dempster back next year for cheaper or a supplemental pick.

I understand the Beltran comp dabynsky used but I'd also like to say that Brian Sabean is stupid

It is a perfect fit for everyone but the Cubs front office.

Isn't Dempster's child receiving care in the Chicago area?

what do you mean

We can argue what Dempster would get in a trade, but the White Sox have one of the weakest farm systems in baseball. The Cubs are looking to add young pieces, and while I would be happy to get a bullpen arm like Jones and a meh prospect. I am not certain that this FO would rather get two decent prospects back for him. So the perfect fit for this front office would be a team like Toronto that has a really deep system.

we arent talking about verlander here. its dempster who will be a fa. you dont need a great farm to trade for a guy like him.

We agree that Dempster isn't Verlander. But as has been discussed previously in this thread, you have to weigh whether you'd want to trade Dempster for middling prospects or whether you want to risk offering him the qualifying contract to snag a draft pick. I'm not sure we know what they'll do (but that's obvious). I also doubt that they'll accept a return like they got for Marlon Byrd. Dempster doesn't have Matt Garza value but he still has value and the front office should exploit it.

And the Cubs could hold onto him and offer him a qualifying offer at the end of the year if the market isn't there like you seem certain of. And either they get a supplemental pick if he tests the market or they get him back next season at a discount from this season.

It all just depends. I mean, clearly he's not Verlander, but he's pitched GREAT this year...and there will be more than 4-5 teams interested in him. So you don't have to have a great farm, but you have to be willing to part with more than every other team.

what we dont know is closed door stuff. he is willing to waive ntc but im sure he has a list of teams he would prefer. only logical destinations for him and his family are: chw, clev, det, tor, pitt, cincy, stl

signing demp for next year does nothing for the cubs. no point in keeping him around.

If he's a one-year $12.5MM pitcher it's a deal I can live with and a worthwhile gamble for the Cubs to make. If they did it, that means that they were gambling that he'd take a better deal elsewhere than to take a paycut to stay with a shit team.

That is exactly the point I was trying to raise. The situation isn't take whatever teams offer the Cubs for Dempster because they will lose him for nothing at the end of the year. The Cubs would prefer to deal him for prospects now and not risk Dempster getting hurt/accepting the qualifying offer next season. But the whole point of my comment was that getting a top 15 prospect from the White Sox is not the same thing as getting a top 15 prospect from Toronto, for example. I'm not talking about getting a top 100 prospect in the deal, though it has happened in the past as I've brought up a few times. I am just talking about the fact that there are a number of other teams that could use Dempster that have much deeper systems to deal to the Cubs. That doesn't mean it is impossible that Dempster will end up on the Southside, but I think it was pretty clear what I meant when I said the match was perfect for everyone except the Cubs front office.
