The Cubs don't have to trade Dempster. They can just keep him and pocket a draft pick if he signs elsewhere because he'd probably still command a multi-year deal somewhere.

Exactly the Cubs aren't in a situation where they have to trade Dempster. The Cubs would love to trade Dempster, but if the offer is similar to what the White Sox gave up for Youkilis then why bother. Worst case scenario you have an effective starter on a one year deal that would be a paycut and you can go through the same situation the following year.

I dont see any team giving Demp 12.5 mil + cause to get comp they would have to offer him ARB for 12.5 mil which Demp would take in heart beat

You are right that Dempster probably doesn't get 12.5 million on the open market, but I could see Dempster holding out for a multiyear deal. This is probably his last shot at one, and would a two or three deal at 6-8 million dollars would probably be a better deal for him anyway.

for garza. i dont know how the cubs can improve their mediocre farm when they have no one really outside of garza with value. id much rather have a bad farm with a handful of pieces and focus on established proven players via fa and trade.

The Phillies, Red Sox, and White Sox have tried this and they've all failed. Having a barren farm system is bad, as simplistic as that sounds.

Forgot about the World Series part of that. Well aside from the White Sox the Phillies and Red Sox have sucked this season and they both have gutted their farm systems.

Big contracts + lack of young talent + rapidly declining veterans = bad team going nowhere fast

The Phillies had a window of opportunity to win with their core and they did that pretty well. Unfortunately everyone broke down or declined almost all at once and there aren't suitable pieces in place to replace the guys who were injured or suck. Chase Utley is back though, so there's that.

I think that's what USC was saying. "Moneyball" is more of a concept than anything and most teams these days will play some form of Moneyball to find that extra edge.

As a Cub fan i would take WS even if that meant my team would get old, big contracts, lack of young talent. Trust me those teams dont regret doing what they did. They won because of it. Every team has a short window. Seems the only team that doesnt in MLB is the NYY

but if the bosox and phils decide to sell they will gain a lot in the farm. alot of mlb pieces worth value on those teams.

I worry more about becoming one of the many teams who's farm systems you've been hearing about for years that have gone nowhere as opposed to being the Phillies or Red Sox
