Tell us more on how you thought Mahomes would be awful.
Being wrong about Mahomes I can deal with but come on. Deshone Kizer and Justin Fields? When guys are bad they're just plain bad. Fields and Kizer were both very very bad.

Justin Fields was bad every year he was here like remarkably bad. At least with Trubisky there seemed to be some hope. There was never any hope with the backup kick returner from Pittsburgh.

In 2018 Trubisky averaged 230 yards per game. His 24 passing touchdowns are 5th best all time in a Chicago Bears uniform. Justin Fields isn't even in the Top-10.

You have mistaken his ability to run the ball with that of a successful QB. Just like they were mistaken about Devin Hester's return ability translating to being a WR1.

You saw Justin Fields rushing ability the same way you saw Devin Hester's return ability.

Baldinger keeping it honest.
  • Center position is going to be a problem. Offensive line is only as strong as it's center
  • Don't expect much from Booker this season because most teams in the Big 12.basically play the same defense
  • Kiran Amegadje has an NFL body but didn't help himself by playing against IVY League competition. He is going to have a big adjustment in the NFL; might need to move inside
  • Interior line needs to play together and you need consistency there to be good. Jenkins could be a fixture but needs to play to do that
  • Defensive linemen make biggest jump between 1st and 2nd seasons. Hard to find good 3 technique guys
  • Two games a year are decided by special teams. Punter might help that.
Poles lack of actually getting a veteran, solid center is going to give us trouble. Grabbing another team's second stringer and hoping that they solidify an interior line is the kind of discount shopping that could hurt Poles. He's done a lot of good things to off season, but the interior line is not one of them

Didn’t Shelton start every game for the Rams last year?

Yes, Shelton was the Rams starting center for the past 2 years. He has 32 total starts in his career.

And Poles obviously has thought highly of Ryan Bates for a while as he tried to sign him as a restricted FA and now traded for him. Bates was a starter for the Bills in 2022 and was their jack of all trades back-up in 2023.

They are not elite by any means, but they should be serviceable. And being just serviceable is a huge upgrade over anything the Bears have had for several years now at center.

Ummm, what?

You are fine with being wrong on the generation's best passer, but are passing judgment on people who got their hopes up on other QBs?

That is some hefty superiority complex you're lifting around, pal.

I have so much hope but little for this OL. Maybe it is just because of repetitive poor play (especially at center) but I am waiting to believe that the team has it settled (for the short term) when I see it.

Google tells me aluminium oxide, silicon carbide sharpen iron or steel so maybe Bears D is the human equivalent of that? Bears D is the 1000 grit whetstone of the NFL.
Fuck that.

Diamond (saws) cut diamonds and diamonds cut everything else.

Bears defense shapes Caleb and Caleb will cut apart every team's defense.

Or so I hope.

Remember how facing Lovie's defense made Jay Cutler stop turning the ball over because IRON SHARPENS IRON?
Have you ever considered that Cutler, without having faced Lovie's defense, might have had even more interceptions than he did?

No one knew how great Mahomes would be. No one knew he was going to be probably the best ever. But you should have known Justin Fields was going to be awful after his second year. Everyone deserves a rookie year of growth and development. But there should be obvious signs of greatness minimally in year two. Hell even Trubisky looked like the guy in year two.

But the way people STILL fight for Justin Fields is just baffling.

My concerns this year are health and Davis who I suspect will have a bounce back year after last year's crappy play. At least we have a way to fix things if needed. With a 2nd capable C we can always move Bates over if needed and Pryor can play in or out and better than Borom. No clue what the rook will bring this early. My guess is that he'll struggle with bull rushes until he regains his strength after he's fully recovered.

One small point I noticed in one of the Athletic New York Times articles:
When we watched the red zone drills, Williams was constantly under pressure while his receivers (which didn’t include Rome Odunze or Keenan Allen) tried to get open.
  1. Yes, it's only May. First-year QB, new offense for everyone
  2. These are OTAs and two of the starting offensive linemen and two of the (probable) starting receivers were not in attendance
  3. Vanilla offense with no game-planning against the defense. If I'm honest, I've heard this about every Bears training camp that I can remember.
  4. Linemen can't be evaluated without pads
We get it; be patient, everything's new, and Eberflus still has plenty of styling gel. But on defense, they were also missing the team's best defensive end and pass-rusher. There are no conclusions to be drawn here, but it is something to keep your eyes on.

I’m sorry but this kind of stuff is idiotic at this point.

He’s a rookie. It’s a brand new system. No Allen. No Odunze. Apparently, he had a real good first OTA. I realize you mentioned most of these points.

The ONLY way I would be concerned at this point is if I was reading reports that his arm talent was not as advertised or he was acting like an entitled asshole.
