I think at this time last year Mariotta was considered a top rated QB

In a college offense. I don't see much difference between him and Hundley other than draft position. Petty is a better passer than both, imo. Fales was a weak armed guy when they drafted him - maybe suited to a college offense? You'd expect them to get it right given the law of averages.

It's not just about a RG3 deal or Andrew luck type prospect. GM's need to be 100% certain when they draft a QB in the first round regardless. Once you draft a QB in the first round you are basically saying this is the guy who will lead us now and/or into the future because it is going to cripple you regardless

I agree they have to commit to it.

But that doesn't mean that the guy needs to be perfect and not need development. Maybe Pace thinks Mariota has a skill set he won't find next year or has faith that Gase can develop the technique to match the physical skills.

But I agree if Pace takes Mariota they are tied together and will sink or swim together.

I really do not think the Bears will be in the top 10 again anytime soon.

It took literally the worse coaching staff ever to get to 5-11.

John Fox, Vic Fangio and Adam Gase should get the Bears to 7-9 on their own.

No. You're underestimating the role of the roster...this was a bad, old and slow roster last yr.

We've moved in the right direction, but there are miles to go until we sniff a divisional title or more.

I agree with that, no dumbasses around anymore. Some of the position coaches weren't but that staff was so far over its head.

This. The Bears need to take advantage of this top pick and get a top QB prospect.

Would it guarantee them a better QB than Mariota?

Most "experts" had Conner Cook ranked lower than Mariota and Hackenberg would be the presumptive #1 pick.

Correct. Mariota was further along in his development than they were.

7-9 is not sniffing a division title...

I hope not - Packers are the challenge. I don't think anyone should be in the playoffs below .500.

Good observation.

Now, if you were responding to someone who asserted it was such, I would understand the post.

Also, I think there is a good chance we go 7-9 this yr, but it won't be SOLELY bc of the coaching change if we do.

I kinda like the staff and Pace seems like a guy willing to take input. It's an instant upgrade to get Tucker off Soldier Field.

I agree....I like the GM's moves so far, but will reserve judgement until after the draft for the most part. I was one of the earliest on the Fox bandwagon on here.

With the 2014 Rostsr I think this staff would have been 7-9.

The Bears would have quit in far fewer games and the defense actually would have had a plan and a play caller that was not determined to sabatoge them.

With an improved roster in 2015 I am confident in 7-9 maybe 8-8 depending on health.

I wouldn't be shocked by a 10 win team

1 far supierior coaching on every level

2 no way cutler is as bad with turnovers as last year

3 I expect a much improved defense that's gonna catch the teams in our division by supprise

4 and no way we are as unlucky injury wise as we were last season

No idea- not being a pro scout- I couldn't give you a read on how the 2016 NFL QB class is shaping up- nor how it compares to Mariota/Winston/Hundley/Petty. Still- if you are at the poker table- and the dealer gives you off suited rags, you fold and play the next hand.

If he gives you pocket 10s you play them.

You don't fold till you get pocket aces.

Not sure what we are debating. My original post pointed out that if the Bears wanted to insure a high draft pick- starting Clausen/Fales would be the way to go. This isn't a referendum on Mariota. Top 7 might be as close as they get to a premium QB prospect for the foreseeable future. Or next years QB class might be loaded. Were I a pro scout- I'd certainly have better insight on that. Either way- all for naught- Titans won't move that pick for Cutler.

Pocker? Gaylord Pocker?
