Detroit never seems to have that problem.

They will.

I get tired of the Detroit example to be honest. Lidstrom is still the bread and butter of that club. Once he goes the Wings will be fucked. Watch and see. Has little to do with cap management and great drafting in Detroit but more so to do with who their core guys have been. Guys that were there before the cap was installed. Detroit will be fucked in a few years when they actually have to start building a club within the cap era instead of adding pieces to an already exsisting roster.

Im fucked up today though so no listen to TCD. Listen to the happy people and the birds!!

They still make that roster with all of their stars fit under the salary cap, don't they? Without sacrificing role players.

They have no cap space. They lost a bunch of "role" guys last year because they couldn't afford them. Hossa, Hudler, Lilia, Leno, ect ect.... Just because the plaeyrs they call up are better thats drafting in your later rounds.

They couldn't even sign a goalie unless they could get him for 500k thus Nabokov who was then taken off waivers.

Wings have their cap issues...

Somewhat. They do it more so by not spending a dime on goalkeeping. Imagine if they had a 4 million dollar goalkeeper like any other team? They would lose key roster players and it wouldn't be the same team.

My opinion. They have managed to deal with the cap fairly well you are right but it hasn't left holes on the club. If anything the Wings have discovered that the big goalkeeping contract really does mean shit in this league now. If anything I think Bowman is picking up on that key here. We should look at what Crawfords going to want down the road. Time to start spoling that guy now and making him feel wanted on the Hawks. Sucking up so to speak.

If I am a young goalie on the farm or playing juniors or any level hoping to make the NHL someday. I would be worried about being the lowest paid position in the future. I think the days of big goalie contracts might be coming to an end.

But yah 5 guys on Detroit who have the biggest cap hits Lidstom/Rafalski/Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Franzen. They eat up a shit load of that cap those 5 guys. Somehow the Wings manage to put a team around them. The key is that their is pretty much no cap hit with goalkeeping. But I have seen the wings play without Lidstrom or Datsyuk in the lineup and they fucking suck esp without Lidstrom. I truely think when Lidstrom hangs em up the Wings are screwed. I think that man is just that big of a key there. It's rare that one guy can be that big of a difference but remember he is the best blueliner of my generation and one of the greatest of all times. I think people tend to forget this when guys like Ovechkin and Crosby and Stamkos are in the league. Lidstrom is a giant hes a legend.

Take Lidstrom out and a higher paid goalie and the Wings are garbage. Just my opinion.

Anyways I derailed this one.

Of course 90 year old Bertuzzi is having two solid years with the Wangs. What radioactive shit is in the water up there? Is Lidstrom done after this year?

People have been saying he's done for 2-3 years. Meanwhile, he's about to win the Norris(IMO). Clearly he has at least a year left in him.

I think Seabs will sign here. I fully supported matching the offer sheet for Hjalmerson. Of course he has had an off year. I think Seabs is very valuable. I think solid stay at home d men are critical for a team. I think goalies can come and go as long as you have those solid d-men. Look and guys like Lidstrom, Chara, and Hal Gill. The make goalies look great.I'm not saying Seabs is Chara or Lidstrom but he is pretty damn good.

On a side note Bowman will sign him or he will have a face to face meeting with Bri. And I'm betting on Bri in that fight.

Who the hell knows with Lidstrom. The man looks like he refuses to slow down until he beats Wayners records lol.

Gotta hate the wings but you gotta admire Lidstroms carrier. He could certainly play a couple more seasons. Would't shock me to see him re-sign with the Wings for another one.

And their group/core has played together for more than 3 years - which is all this Hawks core has barely played together for.

Why did Hossa, Samuelsson and Hudler leave Detroit after the 2009 season? Is it because Detroit couldn't afford to pay them what other teams would due to cap space? Kopecky & Leno were gone, too.

I know there were lots of injuries, but they still were a worse team than they were the two prior seasons.

I really hope you are right, but I said the same damn thing when Bowman stepped down, then when Yserman retired .....

Here's the difference in playing together for a long time/time these guys have been on same team -

Cleary - 6yrs

Datsyuk - 9yrs

Draper - 17yrs

Filpula - 5yrs

Franzen - 5yrs

Holmstrom - 14yrs

Hudler - 7yrs

Kronwell - 7yrs

Lidstrom - 19yrs

Zetteberg - 8yrs

Then Stuart and Rafalski are both in yr 3/4 respectively. So when their "core" group has played together for 5+ years, it makes a difference. Toews and Kane havent even been in the league that long yet. The Hawks 5+ group -

Keith - 5yrs

Seabrook - 5yrs

Sharp - 6yrs

Honestly if Seabs wants anything over 4.5 a year go jump in the lake. Buff, Campbell, Boyle, (soon to be) Shea Weber, for one reason, offensive defenseman. There is a shortage of them and so there is a premium on the position.

Again if you think Nashville is going to let Weber go for less than 5 mil your crazy.

Seabrook is worth 5 at least, compared to OTHER contracts.

That's the beauty of it, they don't have to compare him to other contracts. Just what it will take to keep him here.

Ohlund gets 5.5 this year and next on his contract. That should say something.

Buff could be nominated for the Norris. Keith won the Norris... I'd be surprised if Seabrook makes more than either of them.

Buff will get some Norris consideration, but his play in 2011 has seriously fell off. Not just offensively. All voters would be using would be his quick start out of the gate. I would be surprised if he's in the top 5 for voting.

Letang, Chara, Lidstrom (just because). Yandle, Weber, Visnovsky, Ehrhoff may all finish above Buff-- but the exposure in the All Star Game may prove me wrong.

Atlanta did well in securing a player that will have some nice exposure in Buff-- but the team needs an offensive player to break the mold and be a scorer. Will that be Kane?

As far as Seabrook is concerned-- I've heard so many numbers it's just a guessing game now.

My hope is that he re-signs, and you have the physical presence the blue line needs.

My brain keeps saying 29m for 6 years. Puts a cap hit of 4.833 on the books. Divy that up as you may. That's all of the NHL 11 I have for you today.

I think Weber is probably one of the top defenseman in the world right now, if not the very best. I'd consider that option but also, if Vancouver were to send him an offer sheet in the $5M-$6M range then the Hawks match it -- simple as that.

Any higher than $6.2M and they have to give up two 1st round picks, a 2nd, and a 3rd.

So 6.2 + 7.1 + 5.5 + 3.5 = 22.3m. 36% - 38% of the teams salary cap...that's pretty steep for 4 players.
