Not a bad list, but the Doors are definitely not overrated. I'd even argue Def Leppard isn't overrated, since people don't really talk about them much.

doors are shit. jim morrison was a fucking master song writer and damn good singer and great poet too. But that band. I mean lead organ, wtf

I recently debated the most overrated and underrated rock musicians of the past couple decades with a buddy, this is the list (combined) we came up with:

Most Overrated (does not mean IMO they necessarily suck): Bob Dylan, Coldplay, AC/DC, Dave Matthews, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Moody Blues, Def Leppard, Doors, Reo Speedwagon

Most Underrated: Radiohead, Thin Lizzy, Gaslight Anthem, Peter Gabriel

Its a fun subjective topic. I have a hard time with these debates because they are subjective based to the core but i will play cause i love music.

Im not sure if i would put radiohead as underrated myself though. Through the late 90s and 2000s they were probably the most critically acclaimed band on earth with a massive fan base. They also changed a lot of how groups produced music and sold it. If not in north america they are legends in the UK. Also a shit load of bands have claimed them to be large inspirations.

Over rated. First band that comes to my mind is Oasis.
Under rated in my opinion....Mozart!! Lol im serious. Mozart is the first rebel punk rock artist!! Okay okay he probably isnt under rated....im just a massive mozart fan ( im not shy of classical) and i get sick of beethoven fans!! Nerd fight!!

Under rated for real....suicidal tendencies. Yah....im even shocked i picked them but i did. I think they were doing incredibly different things in the late 80s and 90s and were before their time yet still relevant to it if that makes any sense. Might have had to be a metal head at that time to understand the scene and how different suicidal was.

And to give paul a boner...i would put Melvins as under rated and ween. Shit Ween...may actually be the most under rated ever.

fuckin love some ween.

How can one not?!

Dont know any group that has invaded every single genre the way they have while creating a distinct ween sound and some weird fucked up genres a long the way. Pretty outstanding things they did and a pretty solid discography.

LOL, excellent point. I'm a Morrison fanboy. I don't recognize The Doors post Morrison. As for Beatles and Nirvana, I like them both, a lot. I only put them at the top of my overrated list because I don't really feel much when I listen to them. That, and people lose their fucking minds if they get any criticism, like you just sold your soul to Satan or some shit.

I don't think either were doing something that was never done before. The Beatles got popular because they made teeny girls tingle in their panties. At least they evolved, or became what they wanted. Nirvana, especially, was simply recognized first. Bands like STP and Alice in Chains were doing the same thing at the same time.

Hmmmmm not sure if i agree putting nirvana and chains in the same category. I love em both but chains and nirvana shared very little similarity other than coming from the pacific north west. Thats the frustrating part of that scene i agree nirvana became the poster boys for it and were not exactly deserving of it. But isnt that what drove cobain fucking crazy in the first place besides the heroin? All those big groups taht broke through at that time did have distinctly different sounds but i agree they did borrow off a lot of other stuff before them and during them. Not going to mistake pearl jam for any other band not going to mistake soundgarden or chains or nirvana for anyother bands they had distinct sounds and styles but lumped into that silly "grundge" label that made very little sense.

If we are going to talk bout groups that inspired those bands and that movement then its the Melvins and Sonic Youth that lead that charge to name just two that deserve more credit. Meat puppets also...and they were doing that shit in texas before seattle land even hit the map.

Ps while i mentioned them they get to go into the over rated category also..pearl jam. I liked them though but **** they only had 2 complete albums in my opinion. Good artists and musicians though..but man they got flakey fast.

Dare i put foo fighters in the over rated category also? Speaking of former "grundge" personalities.

True, I just combined them because they all get thrown into that "grunge" category. I'd take STP and definitely Alice in Chains over Nirvana any day. Pearl Jam, ugh. It's not that I hate them, just a friend of mine only had so many songs on his mp3 player, and I heard them every day, every other week on the hour drive to work, and the hour drive home. Pearl Jam was on there. I can't listen to them anymore. At all. Plus, I think Eddie Vedder is a douche bag.

I never got into Foo Fighters, thought they were pretty boring, but I respect the **** out of Dave Grohl.

Heres a group that i have struggled with over the years as one that i have liked...hated....respected...back to hated....back to liked.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Under rated or over rated? Or are they right where they should be in music history? What a weird fucking group lol. Love the funk fusion they developed hated the constant california boner rub they never escaped from though. Great albums...boring cliche albums. I dont know where i stand on them personally. Probably get the acclaim they deserve and the critique they also deserve.

Yah pretty much where is atnd with pearl jam and foo fighters. Grohl doth rule.

Oh and on the doors. Jim was one of the most charsmatic ******* in music history even though he was a drunk fucktard sometimes lol. Plus you gotta put these bands in their time and place in not only music history but the social climate at the time. No groups were doing what the doors were doing. They took jims poetry (good or bad) and tried to make that the backbone of the music and it did work wether people like it or not. It wasnt the norm song writing style so it was different. But **** nobody can claim jim wasnt charasmatic and not worth the ticket price alone with the doors.

I really don't like their studio stuff but a friend dragged me to a show a few years ago and I ended up loving it.

Yeah, I loved Morrison growing up. It helped that when I grew out my hair people said I looked like him. Serious, I was practically a Morrison clone, err prior to his overweight slob days.
