Speaking of Chatwood, the Baseball Writers Association Of America is considering making him ineligible for NL Cy Young Award voting due to a clause in his contract, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. If Chatwood receive even one vote for the Cy Young Award in either 2018 or 2019, his 2020 salary will rise from $13MM to $15MM; a single Cy Young vote in both seasons will boost Chatwood’s 2020 figure to $17MM. This creates a conflict of interest for writers covering Chatwood, and the BBWAA, the league and the players’ union had an unspoken agreement that such clauses would no longer be used in player contracts. The last such contract to include such a clause was Curt Schilling‘s deal with the Red Sox in 2007, which was overseen by then-Red Sox GM and now Cubs president of baseball ops Theo Epstein.

Not sure if Theo bows down to Montgomery. His numbers are fringe. 5-5 4.15. 7.27 K/9 is avg. 2.73 BB/9 is pretty good. 7.53 H/9 was pretty decent.

So over all he is a 5 and not really a upgrade to Chatwood. I mean sure if a team is serious about letting him start and want him in a deal that the Cubs fill some needs I dont see a issue with it.

I just don’t see Theo giving him the ball every 5th. On the Pads I can see it.

Cubs Sign Drew Smyly
By Mark Polishuk | December 12, 2017 at 8:01pm CDT

The Cubs have signed left-hander Drew Smyly to a two-year deal, the team announced. Financial terms weren’t released, though The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that Smyly will earn $10MM in guaranteed money, with more than $7MM also available in incentives. Smyly is represented by Frontline.

The Mariners have announced that lefty Drew Smyly will undergo Tommy John surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He is expected to miss the standard twelve to fifteen months in recovery.

That’s obviously devastating news for the 28-year-old southpaw, who had been hoping to work back from elbow issues that have put him on the shelf all year. He had shown quite well in the World Baseball Classic, with enhanced velocity, leading to hopes for a big first season in Seattle.

he is in recovery and this is just a depth deal. Considering the Cubs have one of the best rehab facilities this should turn out pretty good over all.

Nothing wrong with stockpiling.

You can never have too many arms. 2 years and a vesting option for a third

You guys may remember me pounding the table for Smyly last year. I loved his stats. One thing I am curious to pint out is the cubs may view him this year as a bullpen guy. He'll be coming back from TJS and wont be around til likely midseason. So presumably you're going to have 5 other starters. But wouldn't shock me to see him in a role similar to monty.

Also re: this
career
vs LH batters .200/.243/.334 .253 wOBA
vs RH batters .254/.314/.443 .327 wOBA

So, he'd be pretty fucking dominant vs LHP. Last year the best 4 cubs relievers vs LHP were Edwards(.117/.244/.193 .204 wOBA), Davis(.155/.264/.229 .227 wOBA) and Strop(.176/.265/.233 .230 wOBA) and Monty(.226/.297/.333 .276 wOBA). So, if that is indeed their plan he's a pretty interesting addition come july and maybe next year you look at him as a starter. Really like the signing.

Monty replacement in 2nd half ????

I like the signing, cost nothing
Obvious ties to Maddon and Hickey
He only 29

What I think may happen is you might see them be more liberal with using Monty as a starter if the cubs are doing well in the 2nd half and sorta give his BP role to Smyly or you could argue the reverse happens where Smyly comes back is mostly used out of BP but gets a few spot starts. Either way you can really never have enough good LOOGY's and he's probably better than a LOOGY given he was a starter.

What i'm more curious about is if they will continue to keep him in the bullpen. He'd seem like a sneaky good guy to convert from a starter to a BP guy. All his stuff would play up in shorter stints and it was pretty good as a starter.

That would actually fit the mode of having bullpen guys who can go 2+ innings in the playoffs..

I wouldn't want the Cubs to give up a lot.....

And I don't know that a team in their own division would deal with them.......

But if you told me the Cubs were interested in acquiring Billy Hamilton, I wouldn't hate the idea.

I say that as a fan who does not want Almora blocked, so I guess I would consider Hamilton more a specialist. But I wouldn't hate the idea.

I doubt he tosses a pitch in 2018. 12-15 months time line and he went under the knife late June. So earliest would be ASG to even rehabbing. So maybe some minor league innings if that next year. Now 2019 I would expect him in the rotation.

So I'm not sure what this means honestly.

His OBA is really bad for a lead off. We get wrapped up with his wheels but speed is of little use with out a respectable OBA pushing it.

Lester Quintana Hendricks Chatwood

That would mean their next addition is on a 1 yr deal....

I think like Beck says , he gonna be a bullpen guy like Monty..

Or they can always flip him at 2019 deadline

Yeah, probably see him more as pinch runner / late inning defensive replacement (not for Almora)

Not happening. That stuff we have seen when the rosters expand. Joe likes having speed on the bench but not when is ties up a roster spot.

To be honest. If they were going this direction it makes far more sense to splash with Cain. As he gets older he moves to a corner and Almora takes over the lions share of CF. But he is a lead off and a CF.
