looks like the hurries make these signings servicable but we truly look to be one of low sacking teams in all the sport.
ok u got the hurries do we the playmakers on the backend? The short answer is not, the lbs all unproven or suck besides briggs who sucked last year as well. Safeties? average at best.

Really its about the contract not sure how its justified unless it was out of desperation. Another player with less producion than izzy who signed for basically vet minimum when he was let go.

Great point. Didn't think about it that way. In hindsight, not keeping Izzy was a bad decision. The signing of two players still doesn't equal the production of the one player we let go who signed for less money. Emery screwed up that move....

Indeed. Defense doesn't have to be top 10. If they're even average, coupled with our offense, the Bears become a legitimate super bowl threat.

If we can get our DLINE to Top Five that back 7 will be a lot stronger withour new additions.

I know PFF isn't the end-all, be-all, but...

Thanks for posting. Agree with the limitations of PFF grades, but the numbers do demonstrate how often the players were around the QB. Emery remarked about QB completion % at around 64 when clean, 38 when rushed , and obviously 0 when sacked. Houston and Young together had nearly identical # of snaps as Peppers,McC, and Wooten. Houston and Young had 85 tackles and 123 S/H/H's . Pep, McC, and Woot had 47 tackles and 81 S/H/H's. And while Young and Houston may not have the conversion rate to sacks as high as a Jared Allen type, the tackles and total S/H/H #'s are similar. Less glamorous but not necessarily significantly less effective, at a far better price.

This is helpful thanks for posting this.

I like the Young signing. He has more upside / impact than Wooten, I think. Young and Houston will improve the defense considerably. And, I believe Paul Pasqualoni, Reggie Herring and Clint Hurt may be the best acquisitions in the off-season, anyway. Along with the kung-Fu master coach they hired, this coaching staff knows what they are doing. And, they don't mess around.

Regarding the signing of Young, his sack totals in 2013 might not excite Bears fans alone, but they don’t tell the whole story of how productive Young was as an edge rusher last season. He finished third in the league with 48 QB hurries, behind only Greg Hardy and Cameron Wake. Young did play on a talented defensive line so he might have faced less attention than he would on a team with less D-line talent (the Bears), but in his first year as a full-time starter he showed the ability to get to the QB.

That is a talent the Bears are lacking right now and Young's price tag was excellent. For the 2013 season he graded out almost equally against the run and pass, so he’s not just an edge rusher but a well-rounded DE, with speed, who can stay on the field all three downs. He is considered the 2nd Tier of DE prospects in the FA market, nonetheless, but you add a DT DaQuan Jones at tackle and DE's Willie Clarke (Round 3-4) or an Anthony Barr (Round 1) to the equation in the draft, and the D-line starts to takes shape. They can draft Bucannon, a safety, in the 2nd, etc..

This Young acquisition is a good pick-up. I personally wish these threads would quit being hijacked by moaners and whiners and let the Bears finished product on the defense evolve. This is day 3 of FA. Draft ahead. Cuts in June. We are better now than last year on the D-line. Go Bears.

wrong they are not better. Last years dline had two probowlers on it. Just dont even. So tired of the lies. The Franchise is doing it and the fans have to regurgitate it.

Young is the new Idonije. Not going to be spectacular or put up massive numbers but he will be a solid member of the defense. The price is pretty cheap too.

Actually I think Woot is the new Idonije.

We need to make DT our priority now and in the draft and then we can go for CB and Safety BPA

He isn't real young. Dude will be 29 before the season starts.

low mileage, worked hard to get to this point. He is a keeper and Washington/Shea/Young/Bass have to COMBINE for 12 sacks opposite of Houston who hopefully gets 6 to go along with good production from DT's and nickel blitzes

Pep was 34 so by comparison it is younger.

"Younger relative to an over-the-hill vet" is quite a bit different than "young and still on the upswing." I like the signing, but let's not turn Young into something that he's not.

And Willie Young is a talker if you watch the mic'd up video below this thread. We needed a talker on defense, they keep the guys loose but paying attention so balls don't sit on the turf for 5 seconds while your opponent lazily scoops it up and prances to the end zone.

Andy Benoit ‏@Andy_Benoit 2h

Very underrated signing: #Bears getting DE Willie Young. Good raw speed-rushing ability.

Lester A Wiltfong Jr ‏@wiltfongjr 1h

There's a lot being mentioned about the 9 sacks the 2 #Bears new DEs had in 2013, but not many mentions of their 113 combined hits & hurries

Pro Football Focus ‏@PFF 3h

Talented young lineman. 60 total pressures last year, also played run well RT @TheNotoriousBIZ: @PFF Willie Young to Bears? Thoughts?

Sorry...commence bleeding.

Willie Young was at NC State at the same time that Trestman was the offensive coordinator there.

Doesn't mean anything, but I thought it was neat. Maybe, it's not. Whatever.

I know a few people have mentioned signing Wootton. I'm sure the reason nothing has happened with him is that he had surgery and may not even be ready to play until June or July, IIRC. If they re-sign him I'd think it'd have to be a cheap, non-guaranteed deal in case his recovery has setbacks.
