Both Bowmans were here and I assume Scotty wasn't silent come draft time.

I would hope that he wasn't silent as he was brought in to be part of that process. The reality is that there is a team of people that scout, recommend, and pick the draft picks. I have never bought into the it was this person or that persons' pick.

In any case, Kruger has proven to be a decent pick. Let's hope he comes back soon so we can continue to watch his development in to something better.

And I think I heard that Engelland has a hearing today on this hit. Would not be surprised for at least 2 games.

Here's the problem with the instigator, as I've said before:

Scott (our enforcer per se) sees Engelland's dirty hit on a smaller guy. He rushes over and challenges him. The fight and its over. Engelland knows that if he runs another Hawk, Scott will beat his ass. Message made. Give fighting majors and be done.

Now here is a different version where I agree with having an instigator penalty:

Engelland makes a dirty hit on Kruger. Several minutes later or even a period later Scott finds Engelland on the ice. He challenges him, he beats his ass. Message made. BUT Scott went looking for a fight long after the incident. That would be a decent and logical time to apply the instigator.

I see your point, but still disagree on your application of the instigator.

Sometimes, it's better for the team when a player waits to administer justice.

Why wait? Because of the notion that refs only see and therefore punish the retaliation?

I don't like the wait because then you assign a tool bag on your team to go over the wall later on in the game and pick a fight, ala Cam Janssen, who in my opinion is generally a blight on the game.

Do you think Shanny has started to cave to pressure a bit? In the beginning, I felt he was doling out stiffer penalties. I would have hoped for four or five games to get Engellands attention.

Not really...the bigger suspensions were for repeat offenders like Wiz.

I wish these damn suspensions would be in effect the next 3 times the Pens play US...this suspension does us no good, in fact if other WC teams play the Pens, it hurts us. (I went and looked...the Pens next 3 are against the east so at least that is nice.)

Simple point is though that the NHL leadership is hell-bent on refusing to admit that the instigator penalty is the root cause of this lack of respect that is epidemic. They have commentators trying to mouthpiece every other possible reason because of that long river known as "denial."

I think it's his first offense. I would imagine if it happens again it will be double, or more.

Q mentioned they aren't giving enough games for the first offense as well.

These suspensions so far have done nothing to lower the number of head shots on the ice. Nothing!!! There seems to be at least one bad hit every 2nd night. These players just dont seem to give a shit to be honest. I know thats not the case but it seems like it. Its not going to be cleaned up until head shots are taken serious in youth hockey and taught. The guys in the league at the moment are playing under styles that have been with them since their junior days and before that. One just cant shake that off in 4 months.

And espo brings up a good point. Justice really isnt served when the team losing a player to an injury isnt being compinsated in any real fashion. A suspension isnt going to stop a guy like laperier from taking liberties with a guy like toews in a playoff caliber game. Not sure how you would compensate but something better has to be thought up..this isnt working and its finesse teams like ours that suffer most from it.

Nope. I don't like the idea of throwing power plays away.

I disagree to a point. Look at Matt Cooke this year. He's played very clean because he knows what's at stake. Same with Carcillo for the most part. This is something that is engrained into this players from a young age. It's not going to change in one season. It's going to take time. I think its starting to work, but don't expect hits like that to disappear overnight.

I agree with Frank. It's not going to happen over night. Wait till some of these guys have the second offense.

I also find it ironic the Penguins played so hacky after their own team mate has been so vocal about players NOT playing that way. There were more cheap shots during that game than any I can remember all year. Even knowing their star could never play another full season ever again.

Is this now certain?

Yah I agree it's not going to happen over night. And yah i will wait until some of these guys serve their seconds. But really it shouldn't have to take second offenses. If they are going to go the road of suspensions then do it harsh. 2 games really is nothing. All that is is a mini vacation.

I wouldn't be surprised if Crosby's career is over. Ditto for Prnger (different story of course).

If I remember correctly, Crosby left after a knee-on-knee hit, but his concussion symtoms had resumed a few days later.

If Crosby is done. Here is an interesting question

Does he go into the Hall Of Fame?

I want to say no, but it could be the same case that was made for Gale Sayers of the Bears, his career was cut short due to injuries and only played 5 to 6 yrs but he was so great during that short time he was a 1st ballot inductee.
