Just as an FYI, I like this signing. I just didn't want the 10 years 200 mil deal. This looks like it is worth it for both the team and the FA.

The Cubs are rockin it, imo. Not only did they steal him for $184, they added a opt out at year 3 and 4, which could work out in their best interests. The Cubs are kickin ass in the off season as they did during the season!!!!

So right now, here is probably the 29 guys fighting for spots on the 25 man

Locks (21)
C - Montero, Ross
1B - Rizzo
2B - Zobrist
3B - Bryant
SS - Russell, Baez
OF - Soler, Heyward, Coghlan, Schwarber
SP - Arrieta, Lester, Hendircks, Hammel, Lackey
RP - Rondon, Strop, Cahill, Wood, Warren

Battle for last four spots
Hitters - LaStella, Alcantra, Szczur
Pitcher - Richard, Brothers, Medina, Ramirez, Rosscup

Note: I assume that Edwards could potentially be moved back to a SP role with this many arms

My five biggest questions
1. Where does Baez take the most time in spring training
2. Will the Cubs make a trade for a TOR arm
3. Is the rotation set or will it potentially involve multiple guys going 3-5 innings
4. How willing are the Cubs to trade prospects in a large 4/5 for 1/2 deal?
5. What is Heyward/the Cubs willingness to play him in CF?

I agree, this is the biggest thing we need to be talking about. Just who is gonna make the roster come opening day????? Also an indicator of trades for another starter..... another pitcher...?

I'm thinking couple of things...

If both Heyward, Bryant, Soler and Schwarber end up being only suited for corner outfield positions long term, who gets traded?

Second, could a package of Soler, Baez and Hendricks get Cubs an ace like Sale or Gray?

Am I the only one intrigued with what Javi can do in CF?

It's interesting but I don't think you can count on him as a CF on what was probably a 90 win team. Think if you're going to try it out the way they seem to be going about it makes sense. Let him work up to it in DWL and as a utility guy off the bench. If he does well, give him more time...etc.

Love the way Hayward plays, could he bust with the Cubs? Sure. Started slow last year.

The contract sounds good for both sides, welcome to Chicago!!

I think that's what the Cubs are weighing right now...Baez in CF, trades for some of our studs, or playing Soler in RF vs Heyward in CF.

I think either way we have improved!

Stay tuned!

Bryant is the 3B. How is he only suited for corner OF?

What if they daringly trade Montero and have Schwarber and Ross?

Bryant lacks agility to become a high quality starter at 3B, similar as Schwarber lacks agility to play any field position.

But it all ends up with - how much defensive liability can you tolerate on your everyday lineup, and both of those guys mentioned above are well worth it.

All in all, if there's an opportunity for Cubs to get another (cost controlled) true ace like Sale or Gray for the cost of both Soler and Baez, as opposed to getting a decent #3 pitcher (Carrasco, Salazar, Ross, Teheran) for just one of those guys, IMO, that decision should be a no brainer - go after an ace.

Bryant had a .6 DWAR. Only 5 3B ranked higher than that who played 140+ games at 3B. Those players are Moustakas, Frazier, Donaldson, Machado and Arenado. Of course a few more should be added in like Beltre and Prado. I'll take Bryant with his bat at 3B.

It seems like the only Cubs games you saw last year were the NLCS.

Or both

You don't move Baez because of his mix of age, potential, and utility value (high level D at 3B, SS, and 2B). Teams tried to acquire him already, and Theo & Co weren't budging. Soler is a much less versatile player, plus the injury issue makes him more expendable.
