Heyward’s deal with #Cubs includes TWO opt-outs, per @pgammo.

Jesse Rogers @ESPNChiCubs
So @jcrasnick reports 8 for 184. I have one opt out after 3. @pgammo says there is a second opt out

Don't like the 3 year opt out. I would prefer it to be 4 or 5 years. Hopefully the first 3 years are 18-20 million per so there is some incentive for him not to jump ship to soon.

C'mon Brett, after your blockbuster Lawrie trade, we had to do something to get you off the front page!! :nelson:

OK, not a good thing that I read that after drinking some water.

It's not a bad deal but a lot still depends on the structure. I mean I'm happy regardless but I'd prefer if it were set up in such a way that you're not giving a ton of money before he possibly gets an opt-out clause. For example, if you pay him $25 mil/season for 3 years and then he opts out that would sorta suck.
In fairness, I was talking about becoming a FA sooner than a ten year deal. the one or two opt out possibilities seems a bit much but if you all win a WS who the heck will care.

Yeah, I dislike the idea of him opting out after three but if the price is reasonable for those first 3 years I mean what team wouldn't want Jason Heyward at 26, 27 and 28? If he leaves, sure that sucks but you will get back the lost draft pick and the cubs still have a number of RF options with hopefully one of Almora/Martinez manning CF by then. Also, you basically give yourself a nice 3 year span to probably be the favorites every year to win a title assuming they re-sign Arrieta.

If Heyward is potentially gone in three years then I absolutely think you can't be trading Soler unless it's for a long term arm.

If he does opt out and leave I am sure the Cubs will get that pick back.

Breaking News!

I am going to have to tell all of the Cardinals fans that we have a dilemma in Chicago between Addison Russell, and Jason Heyward as to who gets to wear the 22 jersey? :cum::cum::cum::cum:

I love the 3 year opt out. if he opts out then we get probably the 3 best years of his career age 26 - 29

side note, I live in Memphis, TN....cardinal country and am absolutely loving hearing all the different responses from the cardinal "faithful." just was listening to sports talk radio on the way home and these cardinal fans were going on about how he doesn't hit for power so it was a good move to let him go and blah blah blah. its like hey guys....he was your best fricken player last year on a division winning team!

another guy was talking about how sad he was today because the cubs knocked his cardinals out of the playoffs and then took heyward from them....literally brought a huge smile to my face. happy time to be a cubs fan!

If they trade Solar a CF is the greater need.

not really if Heyward is going to man CF daily. they have plenty of guys that can play corner spots

LF - Schwarber
CF - Heyward
RF - Coghlan/Baez/Zobrist/etc

Is not an upgrade for the kind of pitcher you are going to get back for Solar.

Not if Baez is out there.

The Cubs don't have to deal anyone for a CF'er and I can guarantee you that Baez could hold the fort down.

I would also bet that he would be a damn good CF'er with his SS instincts, arm, and cat-like (Tommy Boy reference) reflexes.

If the plan is to opt out after 3, then he better not toss that cactus away to soon.
I'm hoping the plan is JH in CF and JS in RF. This offense just seemed night and day different with him and I think he only gets much better.

SHIT, if we would have had that for Soriano and Zambrano, we may not have had to go through all this shit. Or at least for not as long!!
