When a guy hits a ton in minors, and struggles in mlb early on, it's a negative due largely to expectations.

But if he came up as a light hitting defensive star, we'd be thrilled with the offense he provides.

A defensive stud like him, who is fast and great on the bases? Most would love that he can also win games with his power!

Very valuable. Not going anywhere.

Not sure who I'd rather face.....the nats wont have scherzer until game 3 (but then also game 7) and the rest of their rotation is garbage and a slightly more hittable closer in melancon....but they have that dikhead murphy, harper and a ton of power.

The dodgers would have Kershaw in games 2 & 6 and a crap rotation as well.
Their bullpen has been better than nats but is overworked.....theyd have gonzalez, seager and turner who all work the count well.

End of the day....they're similar teams:

One starter with crap behind them
Pretty decent lineups
Dodgers slight edge in pen

Prob prefer nats just to get roark Gonzalez in games 1-2/5-6 and melancon in 9th instead if jansen

Well, the most impressive thing about Baez is the stride with the bat while focusing more on defense than anything. He said he did not really focus on hitting until about June when he got more comfortable playing so many different positions every day. It also when he started hitting well against righties. I mean he has 30 plus home run power with 15 to 20 SB a year. He has gotten better all year and the way he works. I have no doubt he is going to be even better come spring training next year. A whole off season to really work on his zone recognition. He has been locked in all series. The biggest thing to take away on his two game winning hits. They were both with two strikes. That shows not a mechanical adjustment, but a mental adjustment.

Crazy. Just crazy.

Sure, we all knew SF bullpen was their weak link, but didn't see much weakness from them Game 3 (aside from Bryant's heroic 2 run tying shot).
Being a Chicago fan it's safe to say we've been trained for cautious optimism and frequent disappointment.

If any team were to pull of another 9th inning comeback this is it, but odds were still very slim w/ 3 outs left. LOVED that 9th. Wow. Yes, I was pretty damn worried about Friday even, as poorly as they hit all game and the inevitable immense pressure awaiting a game 5 @Wrigley (might've actually been better to play game 5 on the road even!??)

Crazy that a friend of mine was at last night's game and then had 1st row behind Cubs dugout tonight + got a ball tossed up from Madden, met Rickets in line for beer, and witnessed this hella comeback W nearly inside the Cubs dugout. Fantastic & couldn't be happier for them.

If he bring up his bb% to 8%. He becomes a superstar.

TBQH not sure he even needs to go that high. If he's at like 5%/24% with the rest remaining mostly the same you're looking at a potential .280/.330/.450 type hitter with top tier defense and obviously that power. I've went on about this ad nauseam but it's mostly on his k rate which obviously substantially improved. I'd take -4% on his k rate over he +3% to his walk rate from 5% to 8%.

If there's an area the cubs have been weak to it's that they lack a bit of guys who can advance runners. That's one of the reasons I'm higher on a guy like Almora than most. With the way the lineup is currently constructed and with Scwharber likely returning next year they have plenty of high OBP guys at the top. In the playoffs you need a mix of guys who can get that hit to drive guys in. It's why a guy like Conor Gillaspie(.262/.307/.440 on he season) was huge in the playoffs with his 5.9%/13.7% bb/k rate. Pitchers in the playoffs obviously are better usually and less likely to walk guys so being able to put the ball into play becomes bigger. In Baez's case, they don't need him to be a top of the order guy but if he cuts back his K's even more he could be a great like #5 or 6 hitter for them. That power obviously will scare pitchers and if you have 3 or 4 of the top 25-ish OBP in baseball in front of him that could be huge. Russell hit .238/.321/.417 and had 95 RBI's(35th in the majors). You put a guy who hits like .280 or .290 there with Baez's power.... you do he math.

It's more than that. There was inordinate amount of dickwad posters on here tonight. Bandwagon jumpers who think they know this team. It's quite obvious that they did not.

They don't realize these are not your father's Cubs.

Cards fans, trying to dismiss cubs prospects a couple years ago, would say "Yeah, but they're still the Cubs", to which I chuckled and thought "No. no theyre not". ?

OK, I don't think you're wrong with this. I was happy with Lackey over the course of the season obviously.

I just heard so much about Lackey's playoff experience and wasn't impressed with the showing tonight. That's it. I was pissed at Lackey in the moment and apparently that equates to me booing the whole team according to TL1961 which is the only reason this whole discussion is happening,

He isn't the same guy, that is obvious. Lackey is something like 37 years old. I think his benefit to the team is his experience and ability to relate his past experiences to the club. To me he is a calming force, something like what Ross does. Lackey is a competitor, you can see that from the way he plays but he isn't a dominant player anymore. But I do expect at least a decent start from him and usually we are in games with him. He is intense and that can be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on how he plays. He wasn't terrible tonight but he wasn't dominant either, about what I expected. What I didn't expect was Moore's dominance in that game. I really feel bad for him.

I knew coming into this series that this was probably the best overall starting lineup we would face. These guys are brutal and should be 100 game winners. Their bullpen showed me why these guys were a wildcard team. If they put a decent reliever on this squad they would be really scary.

Well, I'm an old fart on this board and to be honest, I was one that thought in the 8th inning that this team looked a lot like the 84 Cubs. I was flat out deflated watching this game. All I could think of was, 'Shit we have Cueto coming up next.' In the past the Cubs would have rolled over. My 19 year old son was eternally optimistic, like I was when I was 17 watching the Cubs in 1984.

I want a World Series. I want a Championship. I don't want my kid to get his hopes up only to have them destroyed by the Cubs. I saw sooooo many crap games growing up. I have felt almost guilty making him a Cubs fan. He grew up in Washington yet he is a Cubs fan, like his dad. He does not deserve years of disappointment. None of us do. We, the fans, deserve a winner.

The last time the Cubs came back in a playoff game that they trailed in after the seventh inning and won? 1910.

after Theo looks like he swallowed half of that champagne shower he was getting, he scoffed at all the BS, which I took as curse talk. These players are not allowed to think about that. I can pretty much guarantee that if any player talks about curse in any interview if something does not go right for them this year is not going to be on this team next spring. You can say no fear in the ninth, but even Joe showed fear going back to wrigley to face Cueto.

What a comeback. Each pitcher that was given one hitter for the Giants walked off that mound not believing he was coming out.

Call me crazy but I honestly think a lot of it has to do with creating a winning culture in the minor leagues. For most teams, I'd argue the minor league team results don't really matter so long as the players develop. Obviously winning is never "bad" but what i'm getting at more is it's not paramount. For the cubs, I sort of feel like you need players who not only are talented but who come in accustom to winning because until they finally do win a world series that's going to be the pressure. And over the past several years the cubs minor league teams have been wildly successful and even this year their low minor teams have been quite good.
