The Richards thing (and the Richards Club):

Me?, Maybe but if the Lightning want him enough, and I've read various places they were dangling Stamkos -who is an RFA...

personally let them have Richards and deal some excess to TB -sign Stamkos to a 9 or 10 year deal, to spread out the cap hit.

(Well I'm sure it would work as a Video Game GM).

Well forget that, it doesn't really matter -there are some guys out there that can address the 2nd line centre slot.

What you look for in this case, would be finding the guy that turns out to be Marc Savard (well pre-injury Marc Savard from a few years ago). Well, imo at least.

Maybe ... or maybe Stamkos is a little greedier than might be deemed practical, in a salary cap environment -but only speaking from the perspective of a general manager.

The point being, who knows what some of these people are like to deal with.

I've always liked pre-scrambled brain Savard.

Boston didn't take much of a cap hit on it either... but er, I admit to coming to Marc Savard as an NHL 2005 (or was it 06 ...well who knows)... GM -and he centred a line with Ladislav Nagy (who for whatever reason was great in those games..), and Vinny Lacavelier.

Anyways -forgetting all of that, finding this year's version of that guy's UFA year -ought to be the goal.

Do not want. A 31 year old center coming off a huge concussion that wants a 7-8 year contract? Also wasn't Dallas' brief resurgence in the 2nd half all while he was injured?

This is a bad contract waiting to happen. I'd rather see the Hawks sign Wiz for 4.5, find a #3 center from wherever and then resign Sharp with this extra cap space.

Well the talk is that Richards wants 8 years at 50-55 million and he has two teams that are desperate enough to make those kind of offers. Really the cap hit wouldn't be too bad on an 8 year 55 million dollar deal, but paying a guy close to 7 million at age 39 isn't likely to work out too well for any club. Alas you can't frontload deals like you did with Hossa because if you could then I would be a lot more interested in going after Richards and giving him what he wants because it is fun to dream of a team with Centers 1A and 1B.

Think Wiz is going to get that much?

Wiz could be on the radar, not sure he will pull that type of a cap hit- but anyways, aside from that - noting that Wiz is a right handed shot and could fill the RD spot that had just been vacated. That could be a pretty good move.

Edit: I didn't mean Savard literally; I meant that in the year that Boston signed Savard he wasn;t the biggest name out there, and in my opinion was not on a lot of teams' radar- which allowed Boston to sign the guy for a moderate to low cap hit for the level of performance that the guy brought the team -before being injured.

If you could find a guy like that among this crop of UFA centres.. that is probably a better fit than the big name out there that has signficant interest from teams that are more into making signing splashes than actual winning (or in the Rangers case -that is how it has worked out since 1994). I have no idea what Toronto is aside from overachieving even in their own minds.

All of which means I couldn't find where Richards was concussed this past season; and he only missed 10 games -so well, I might have mistaken that post above -well who knows... but it is early here. :/

who is our 2nd line center? If you say bolland, you are out of your mind.

Richards played in 72 games last year, not like he missed half of the season and dallas went on a tear. Great Dallas won a few games while he was injured in the small little segment of the season. 28 goals and 49 assts on ehh team.

i guess we all just want those gritty guys like wiz, the ones with fire and passion.

No, Dewey- it is more like I don't know how many depth guys that can get, if they go all in for Richards. That being said - I'm all for Richards, if they can. I just get the idea that once Sather gets interested in someone it becomes a ridiculous bidding war -and then it sort of comes down to the player... so player X,Y, or Z - do you want to play on a team with a shot to go all of the way and has done so, or do you want to rake in the bucks and play at MSG for a few years and pretty much do nothing.

There aren't many UFA centres out there -at least of the quality that the Hawks' need. But Richards isn't the only one (that being said ... I wouldn't object to the guy either - as that would really make for 2 high powered lines on the team, and would provide some big forward matchup issues for opposing teams - ie -do you cover the Toews line or line 2? ).

Spreading Sharp, Kane, and Hossa between two lines with Toews and Richards would be sick for the next couple of seasons, but I agree with just about everything you said. I just see two teams with a ton of cap room and a huge need for a first line center waiting to throw everything at Richards. And after watching last year I do think that it might be wiser to spread the cash around into more than just one spot on the team. I would like better than Scott as my sixth defenseman for example, and that is also assuming than can get Campoli signed which isn't guaranteed.

I am curious where Marcus Kruger and Ben Smith figure into this whole thing. Frolik-Bolland-Bickell developed a lot of chemistry in the playoffs and so are those guys banished to the fourth line. Do they even make the team next year?

Ya think the pipeline is filled sufficiently enough right now to sustain the loss of the next two or four first rounders it would take to snag Stammer?

It is sort of a moot point, as I think that if the team wants to seriously compete next season that it isn't necessarily going to take that type of a player. But rather a few guys.

If it were me, I would see what I could do next season in order to take a serious shot at winning it all again -which basically means one thing: depth. Stamkos doesn't = depth. Richards might not either, or not enough. Depth at forward, but they might do better to spread it around more.
