Per MLB Network (10:00 am Wed) Giants offer may have been tops financially, including a 7th year.

WSCR this morning at 445 was reporting Giants was 6/150. Who knows. Better yet, who cares?

Ouch. Just reading a column about the Cubs drafting one spot ahead of where the Red Sox took Lester.

We took Brian Dopirak, a 1B (that's SO Cubs!) who never made it to MLB.

Until the last few years the track records of drafting on both sides of towns in the last 25+ years leaves a lot to be desired.

That was their offer, but they were prepared to give a bigger one but Lester told them no before they even had a chance to offer it

Yeah which is exactly why the Cubs had to start from scratch when Theo + Co took over. Seriously look at the Cubs 1st round picks from 2000-2010 and try not to laugh. Doesn't matter what sport it is, if you can't draft, you can't win consistently.

They didn't. It got clarified this morning that Lester did take the biggest offer on the table. It was 20%. Added much more cash and added an optional year. I am totally lost why you can't show any objectivity with this.

Show me where it got clarified? Everything I read said the Giants went 7 years and 168. I don't know why you can't be objective to facts

Dodgers and Giants both had offers with 7 years. Dodgers value was never stated but was said to be in the $170M range, while Giants was said to be $168M,it was never officialized because Lester told the Giants no before they offered it.

If true that would mean that the Giants never had an offer, the Dodgers offer never was stated but let's be hoenst if it was 7/170 ther eis no way Lester isn't a Dodger.

It sounds like the only two legit offers were from the Cubs and Red Sox of which both had to come up and eventually with years and money the Cubs paid significantly more. And IMO, worth it all day long.

John Smoltz was saying on MLBN that Lester did not feel comfortable moving his family from Atlanta to CA and gave up money to go to a situation he felt comfortable in. I mean he said many times he wasn't necessarily taking the best deal money wise. And with the Cubs deal, it could very well be equivalent to that 7/$170M if he qualifies for that vesting
option

Oh well. Feels good to finally finish first for a big FA after losing out on Darvish, Puig, Tanaka, etc over the past few years

I really want to see how the rest of this offseason shapes up. The starting pitching should be fine. I still think they are further away with their every day lineup though. I am not sure Lester is going to be an ace when the lineup rounds out. We still have to see what the Cubs add, but they appear 2 bats short.

I just think it usually takes young players 3 or 4 years to figure it out. Yes there are exceptions, but I am not sure it is smart to bet that your young players are exceptions to the rule.

This might get the Cubs in the playoff hunt, playing meaningful games in August and September, but I don't think it makes them division winners.

I know some people are just really tired of the Cubs not spending so this is very symbolic to them. I don't really care about. I question if it is the right baseball move long term.

Good, yes. Great? That remains to be seen. But it's clear the Cubs are going into a season with a real chance at making the playoffs for the first time in over 5 years.

no. based on what?

please tell me what you base that off of? players etc?

I am also curious... How much of his signing had something to do with Maddon being the Cubs coach?

Lester at 26 mil?

Sale/MadBum are making like 12 mil combined in 2015 & those two are miles better than Lester.

As a Royals fan, thank you for getting this guy out of the American League. Are the A's going to have a team left to field next spring?

I think people are missing this. Lester isn't going to be our ace for 6 years. The Cubs have wanted to acquire a younger ace type through trade. This is still on their agenda. You are probably looking at another tor guy, Lester, arrietta is what I think the Cubs hope to have for the 5 years or so

I just formally requested October 2015 off from work to watch the Cubs obliterate teams in the post-season.

Was anyone asking about the White Sox?

And MLB Network reports that both had to go higher due to CA tax rates. So they acknowledged the higher offers, and explained the rationale.
