I didn't like it.

It tried to tell me what to consume rather than just letting me tell it what I consumed.

I used it when I started keto and had no problem with it. It never told me what to eat or not eat. You set your weight goal and the different percentages for the macros you want. It will tell you how many calories you should eat and break them down into fat, protein and carbs Then you plug in the food you eat. Can usually scan the barcode for most stuff. All these type apps are basically the same. Some easier to setup. Total Keto Diet app is easy to use, set it up in a minute and interface is basic, shows nutritional info right there on same page as you add food. Also tracks net carbs rather than just carbs in general.

What's the keto take on having a beer. I know it's all carbs, but if you are under your daily requirements and want to have a low carb beer or two is that going to derail you?

You can but you have to be careful. It can kick you out of ketosis. I stick to vodka, soda water, lime and jameson shots here and there. Hasnt kicked me out of ketosis once.

I usually do vodka, but had a craving for a beer.

OK, I would like a little feedback/guidance, which will require some repeat of info already posted.

I am watching carbs, as I have done a couple times before with success. But I have never followed strict Atkins/SouthBeach/Keto plans. Once I start cutting carbs, I simply watch my carbs, without adhering to a written out meal plan.

Where I currently would like some feedback is this: Previously, one of the basic philosophies I recall was to eat often, in smaller portions, versus the traditional "three meals" thinking. But now, with discussion of Keto / Intermittent Fasting, the opposite is being pushed.

Can someone (re) explain the benefits - and reasoning - behind the IF? The frequent eating was to keep the metabolism going. IF is now to force the body to burn fat?

Pros and Cons of one vs the other?
What is 10-12 IF? I mean, by the time I have slept, assuming I don't eat immediately before bed, I would have the ten hour period nearly every day. I can't imagine that's what is being discussed, right?

Sorry to sound like a noob, but I am trying to "start over", and decide to get with a plan more strictly. I have been cutting carbs, and lost a decent amount, but lately seem to be making no progress. I lost between 15-20 over what is now almost 5 weeks. But the last ten days have been plateau. I am not nearly active enough and that part clearly needs to change, but even still, it seems I have stopped making progress.

Feedback?

Weight loss is not a counting calorie thing. It's a hormone thing. Carbs are sugar and sugar spikes insulin more than anything and also triggers your hunger hormones to call for more sugar. If the goal is to lose fast, you cannot do that with insulin blocking the way. The several small meals a day is counterproductive as it keeps insulin raised and blocks the body's access to stored fat all day. As long as there is sugar coming in to your body, it will only burn sugar and the more sugar you eat, the longer it takes insulin to return to base level.

Intermittent Fasting affords your body a larger time frame in which insulin stays at base level. This opens the door for the 2 main benefits people, who do IF, are looking to gain. With no sugar coming in for longer periods of time, the body has to use fat for energy instead. You cannot burn fat directly. It is first converted to ketones and then used as fuel. The other benefit would be encouraging autop.hagy, a process in which the body heals itself by repairing broken cells and proteins while also reducing inflammation. The Keto diet was invented to mimic fasting and is often used in conjunction with IF to amplify the fat burning affect. By avoiding carbs, insulin will stay at a lower level even when eating. This allows it to return to base level much sooner than if one was consuming high carbs. Keto is not about glorifying fats, like most naysayers says it does. It is all about limiting carbs greatly. So it keeps carbs at 5% of your calories or less. Then it keeps protein at 20%. The reason for limiting protein is because it is known when a lot of protein is consumed the excess will simply be converted to sugar by the process of glucogenesis. So if you want to restrict carbs you also need avoid too much protein which the body would also use as carbs.

For IF, you're generally starting more at 16/8. 10-12 hours not really considered IF although some more active youthful peeps could likely get benefits from 12 hours of intermittent fasting. 16/8, 18/6 and 20/4 are the more popular IF standards with OMAD (One Meal a Day) being the most extreme.

The part about eating infrequently vs frequently is the biggest contradiction I have seen between recommendations.

I recall the "eat less, more often" people point to increased metabolism. But the Keto method stresses using fat for fuel, if I read this right.

Oddly, I happen to be fasting now, consciously or not, since I have had very little hunger since Super Bowl Sunday. I wish it was this easy all the time.

Thanks for the info. I realize 10 hours doesn't count. 16/8 or more like 18/6 seem to be the way to start.

Done a lot of this dieting and beer can be a killer. Vodka soda is a good alternative. Drink that on the golf course with a splash of Mio.

Update: Had my first cheat meal on Saturday night on Keto. I am allowing myself one a month no matter how the crazies say you cant. It knocked me out of ketosis. I went on a 24 hour fast and drank my fake Ketos. Went back in Ketosis in 12 hours and lost 3 pounds in 2 days.

It can be done.

Make sure to count your lime carbs. They exist and can **** up your macros.

anyone doing IF+Keto that lifts?

i've lifted on keto with no problems but if i'm doing IF with it i'd imagine it would be tough

I don't do keto anymore, but I still do IF and I lift 4 times a week.

It's perfectly fine. I do 16/8, I eat between noon and 8 PM (usually I eat dinner around 6 and don't eat the rest of the day), I head to the gym around 830PM.

It works really well for me. Before the holidays fucked my schedule up, I also did a light work out mid morning at home 5 days a week, I'll probably go back to doing that as well.

I do water and black coffee. Cold brewing coffee made a huge difference for me, it (seems) a lot less acidic. I like black coffee but I used to cut it with a little milk because all that acid would give me heartburn, don't feel the need to when I cold brew.

I also do just regular ass black tea as well.

How do you tell when you are in or out of Ketosis?

When I have done low carb in the past (not necessarily Keto), I would plateau and a cheat day would start the metabolism burning carbs again. It helped.

Keto powder. It’s a meal replacement and puts ketos in you. Do not take if you plan to go to sleep soon. I’ll send a pic of bottle when I get home. Works well

I have keto strips for urine. They aren’t 100% but like a home drug test.
