They are exogenous ketones, BHBs (Beta-hydroxybutyrate). BHBs are 1 of 3 ketone bodies your body makes when running on fat rather than glucose. I would not advocate the BHB powders and capsules. They are a high priced scam and will do little to nothing to help you get in nutritional ketosis, which is where you wanna be to reap the benefits of keto. These powders usually have propriety blends which means you don't even get to see how much of this, that, or actual BHBs you're actually paying for.

What CAN you have when you are in the fasting period?
Water? Tea? Coffee? Diet Soda? Anything?
I've always gone by the rule anything but water breaks the fast. Certainly anything with calories would break a fast. There is such a thing as a dry fast in which you eat nor drink anything at all including water. Studies show doing a dry fast is 3 times more effective than a water fast.
How do you tell when you are in or out of Ketosis?
You'll feel a difference but can also get a ketone blood test meter that, much like a glucose meter measures your sugar level, the ketone meter measure the ketones in your blood. There are urine strips as well that are cheaper but they're cheaper for a reason, not a reliable way at all to measure your state of ketosis.
How did you guys all get so f**ing fat that you have to put yourselves through this?
There are other health benefits to be had. Just so happens weight loss comes extremely easy when you avoid sugar.
Didn't really put myself through anything bad. Went from a meat and potatoes guy who could no longer eat meat without it causing severe stomach problems to being a meat and green vegetables guy who no longer suffered the slightest bit of stomach problems when eating meat.
