why yes...yes he does. 7% increase in revenue and stuffz.

When will the MLS pass the NHL?

When the Fire forum gets more members? :shifty:

If they can figure their shit out, there are enough people in Canada and the northern US of A that love hockey and will be able to keep the sport going. Bad PR is bad PR, though, and they'll take a huge hit. I don't know how big but they definitely won't be "ok"...but at the same time, I doubt the sport as a pro league will just off and die.

It wont die. It will just have more teams taking a hit in attendance/revenue. Teams that are on the line and can go either way are now on the wrong side of the tracks. What steps they took in the last 8 years or so are now pretty much back to square one. Sure the big markets will still be ok but those other teams are going to suffer which will make the league suffer.

I'd be surprised if they don't think about contracting some of the worst-performing teams or some of the teams in redundant markets. Tougher to do though when certain teams have won Cups though.

So you laugh at facts? Unfortunately the facts are out there because of two previous lockouts. Increases in attendance and revenue followed both of them. Pretty plain and simple and no personal attacks involved, weird.

The circumstances surrounding this lockout may be different though, particularly with football and baseball being so much more popular, the NBA also gaining in popularity while the economy is in recovery mode.

ok, so that means it will happen now right? I mean the economic attrition is at its worst but yet you think it WILL repeat the same growth. thats pretty ignorant and very naive.

They absolutely could be but the past is a good indicator. The NBA had an increase in ticket sales last year after their lockout. Hell, the amount of money the fans are saving on tickets, gas, food, etc is just going to free up more to spend in the future. I much rather be spending my money on hockey games but in the meanwhile I will continue to put I back into my pocket.

popularity of the sport actually weighs in the most of all variables yet fans like to ignore that and look at what happened after 05 when the economy was at its peak. history in revunue increases will NOT repeat when the lockout is over and that has a lot to do with popularity and the economy.

Not ignorant or naive one bit. I'm looking at the past lockouts and even the NBAs lockout which took place in the current economy. (Insert dumb emoticon here)

NBA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>NHL

no comparison in the leagues. Again POPULARITY plays a huge huge part in this.

Past lockouts have zero to do with current lockouts....the ERA of the economy is a lot different.

both of your points to equal a POSITIVE feeling are irrelevant. None have anything to do with what will happen now.

I think fans of hockey are pretty passionate about their sport. I don't think hockey gets nearly the same TV revenues so they might still hurt a bit even if the attendance doesn't decrease significantly. But honestly, I haven't followed hockey quite as ardently as I used to ever since the idiot commissioner moved the broadcasts off of ESPN.

I'm not a fan of Bettman in the slightest but I actually think the move to NBCSports turned out to be a good one in the long term. Recently a long term contract was signed where I believe NBCSports put up more money (or matched) ESPN. Hockey would continue to get lost in the shuffle on ESPN. Maybe not great for the casual fan but overall a move that has turned out well.

The good news is that the Blackhawks will still show games on WGN and the U so I'm not hockey-less

Well, before the lockout anyway.

NHL is the least popular of the major 4 in the states, but over the last 5 years or so their attendance has been having the best growth compared to other leagues. I am pretty sure the other 3 have declined in ticket sales while the NHL has increased. Still the least popular but but not making the difference that you are making popularity out to be. NHL will never catch the other 3 in the US and I've said before, if that is the NHLs intention then they are missing the boat on this one.

I think the NHL should strive to compete with other sports even if they cant leap frog anyone, they need to have lofty goals and with those goals it will help the league. The NHL could be so awesome but they just are bad with getting new fans and casual fans to really get into it and become a molded die hard.
