Well you obviously buy the estimate or you wouldn't use it.

Of course at $40m it's stupid. But it's kinda funny that everyone thinks he sucks but an NFL GM is going to give him 8x what they're going to give Fields.
Again. Not my number. You can hate it all you want.

I wouldn’t do it either. I'm just telling you what the rate is.

You know what the speculation is, not the rate.

Semantics.

You think they should just run it back with Russ even though they may miss out on Higgins?

Of course not, I'm saying that is unlikely to happen, although their chances of getting Higgins are low no matter what happens.

If you are using the $40m number, that means you think it will likely happen. And I'm wondering why you think it's likely if you think Russ is also a bum.

I never said Russ was a bum.

I was talking money.

Would I basically go .500 for 30 mill or 13 mill is the question.

Honesty, to me, it seems the thought that they may consider the younger cheaper option seems to threaten some here for some reason that I don't understand.

Pittsburgh put themselves into this situation and I'm sure they'll figure it out.

And I'm hearing they want to spend the money elsewhere, for example, on a Higgins. Again that's what some of the articles are hinting at.

Agreed.

If you take the money at face value, it's like do you want to overpay by 3x for one or pay the going rate for another, when neither is a game changer? It's an easy call. But I don't think Russ will get anywhere near that - it's not being threatened, it's questioning why people think he'll get so much but also that he isn't good.

I doubt Higgins makes it to FA and if he does it's going to be frenzy.

Again it's not how good or bad Russ is. They don't have enough on offense. Russ may be a better fit elsewhere.

They have to upgrade the offense. It can't just be moon balls to Pickens. They had to start 3 rookies on oline because of injury.

They need to put more resources on that side of the ball, plus pay some key defenders.

And Russ is 35 and can't move as well as he used to.

If Russ were 27 it'd be a different story.

Something to add: Russ has said he'd like to stay. Maybe he takes a discount to sign.

If he takes the going rate though, it won't happen.

I don't care what the locals say… Higgins and the Steelers seems like a marriage that won’t happen. Good way to throw your career in the shitter.

So we are going to pretend Tomlin didn't bench fields for Wilson and play Wilson the rest of the season including the playoffs because he clearly had more faith in him. But now he's going to choose fields?
Unbiased people understand that Russ was promised the starting job, which is why he choose to sign with the Steelers. Justin went 4-2 while Russ was out injured, then Russ became healthy and was given his promised starting position.

The owner of the Steelers has clearly hinted that they would prefer to re-sign Justin Fields instead of Russ, but it will depend on Justin accepting less money than he may be able to get from other teams (Raiders, Jets, Colts).

To me Russ is the very definition of a take it or leave it type of offer.

If, for some reason, they want to keep him it's only on their terms.

Insert whatever # is appropriate: 10-12-15-20 whatever.

But it should be a conversation like ....

Hey Russ How about 1 year @ 12.

No?

Okay, bye *****.

No coach is going to stick with a guy down the stretch if he thinks another guy gives the team a better chance to win.

Care to explain?

The biggest issue in his development is his inability to stay healthy. They absolutely need a winning season to stick around and no idea how you can as a franchise be confident that he's going to play the entire season.

Fields has a higher floor and pretty similar ceiling but they might be going down with the ship.

Because the Broncos ate the remainder of Russell Wilson’s enormous contract, any team signing him was getting the ultimate bargain. For that reason, Russ had many options of teams to sign with, which gave him negotiating power. He used that power to bargain for a starting position, so he chose the Steelers because they agreed.

This is not difficult to understand, but some of you are choosing to make it difficult because of your hate for Justin Fields.

Yes, in the NFL you can never expect coaches to do what gives them the best chance to win. Good point. He did have the chance to start, but they didn't have to continue to start him. But they did.

And I like Justin Fields, I'm just not obsessed with him and willing to suspend disbelief because of that.

It's almost embarrassing that this guy is arguing like there was some contractual agreement to play Wilson over fields, no matter the outcome. Tomlin pretty clearly preferred what Wilson brought to the passing game.
