IMO this was just the natural posturing process that happens when public opinion is used within contract extensions.

Both sides are communicating things. Fans and pass observers get all worked up about what both sides are asking for without realizing negotiations never start at their end destination. Then, a deal is struck.

Imagine if Seattle didn't leak they were offering $21M/year or that Wilson wanted $25M/year? This thread wouldn't have started in the first place and we wouldn't care that he signed.

I think Allen, Schneider and Carroll can breathe a little easier now that they've got Wilson locked up at the start of training camp.

Although I hope that Carroll is still huffing...I don't like that guy.

Here's a good contract breakdown from OTC.

My overall thoughts are that he's got the biggest QB deal on the market and his contract ends when he's 30, so there's another massive payday that will hit.

Actually you and a few others were making the argument that he's not worth $21M.

NFL contracts are a good example of a free market in that players get paid what a team is willing to pay for their services.

Seattle offering a deal that pays him $21.9M/year means he's worth more than $21M.
It means he is worth that much to 1 person, Paul Allen. Just like a bottle of Tequila Ley .925 costs $3.5M, it may be worth it to Jay-Z but not 99.99999% of humanity. Somethings value and it's cost don't always match.

Would you say Wilsons play has only been worth the $2.3M he has been paid th 3 previous years?

I've always wondered why people don't like Carroll. What's your beef with the Energizer Bunny on Oxygen?

I'd say he exceeded his contract value.

We cannot make that assessment of his current contract because we have to see that play out.

Agreed, and it will be interesting to see the contract and guarantees.
Something like:
$31M SB guaranteed
2015 $1.7 base guaranteed
2016 $10 base guaranteed
2017 $12 base guaranteed
2018 $15 base $5.3M guaranteed
2019 $16 base
That would equal cap hits of $7.9,M, $16.2, $18.2 over the next 3 years with a $5.3 M buy out in 2018 if he flops. Though the accelerated cap hit would be $24 M in that scenario.

If he is a stud he would have cap hits of $21.2M and $22.2M in 2018 and 2019.

Pretty fuckin' close:
2015 $700,000 $6,354,868 $0 $0 $0 $7,054,868
2016 $12,340,000 $6,200,000 $0 $0 $0 $18,540,000
2017 $12,600,000 $6,200,000 $0 $0 $0 $18,800,000
2018 $15,500,000 $6,200,000 $0 $0 $0 $21,700,000
2019 $17,000,000 $6,200,000 $0 $0 $0 $23,200,000

I'm actually pretty impressed as to how accurate you were while being wrong on the underlying subject matter.

Kudos!

It's his demeanor I think, I've never much cared for him going back to the Pats days.

He's a big Rah-Rah guy. Seems like more of a hype man than a coach, but I think that speaks to there being so many different ways to succeed.

Some hate him over leaving USC when the NCAA was coming down on them.

Personally I don't fault him for that. It's real difficult for a coach to know all the shit that's going on within the program. Things have just gotten so big and there's so much money changing hands how can you put it all on one guy, who's also trying to recruit and coach a team?

RE: Pats - It was Tedy Bruschi who said much of that Superbowl defense that started the Pats dynasty were holdovers from Pete Carroll and were taught most of what they knew by Pete.

That has a lot to do with it. Him standing right by the refs for the fail mary call or when Rice caught the TD against the Bears. It seemed like he was more concerned with jumping up and down vs checking on Rice's concussion that he just received.

I've read some things where he really likes to live in the moment. I think he really cares about his players and after the fact was thinking about the ramifications of both things you mentioned, but in the moment he was just taking it all in.

I can't really fault that. He's 63 years old and has a lot more expreiences than I do. Many times I catch myself thinking how I should be reacting rather than just enjoying myself. It might be a wiser way to go about things, but who knows.

I do like the way that team is built, it's a throwback style...Build the D have a good RB....and have a QB that happens to be one of the best in the league.

His reaction to the fail mary is what pisses me off the most. The refs hand him the game and he acts like he won the damn Super Bowl. Take your lucky win and go away Pete.

I think both are acceptable. It was a backhanded compliment, so either response is warranted.

Maybe an overly sarcastic 'Thank you??????' fits both, but a good old FU always has a place in a message board conversation.

60 mill guaranteed. wow.

we still have to fugure out if it's 'fully guaranteed'. A few years ago teams started guaranteeing players for football injury, but if they get cut for stupidity or get injured off the field the team could cut and move on with little financial reprocussions.

I've heard it's a $31M signing bonus, so that's fully guaranteed. After that the wording on the roster bonuses will determine how much is actually guaranteed.
