He won the Cup with the Habs and the Red Wings (three of them). Why the **** would the Hawks retire his jersey? I don't get it.

Mean while Seabrook has won ONE Cup so far with the HAWKS, and who knows how many others in the future. NO WAY. #7 is SEABROOK.

He's not a Hawk, he's a Red Wing. He played 10 years with the Wings, the most of any team in his career and now works with them in their front office.

Get over him.[/quote]

You beat me to that argument.

I don't care if being a potential HOF is consideration for jersey retirement in this town. He's not getting a number retired here, that's for sure. As long as fans like us are still around, there will be no way in hell we see Chelios' jersey retired here.

Plus, to Seabrook's credit, he's got 1 Cup as a Hawk and a gold medal to his credit as opposed to Chelios. That alone warrants future consideration. If Seabrook stays more years and perhaps win another Cup, you can bet his jersey will hang from the rafters along with many others from our squad...

Yeah, he was a hell of a player during his career, and I was a huge fan when he played here. But the bottom line is that he played the majority of his career elsewhere, and basically retired as a Wing, joining their front office. So I say hell no, and add one vote for Dany, just cuz.

I guess the questions I have for the majority here are:

What constitutes retiring a #?

Should off ice actions play a role in that retirement?

Should coaches have a banner?

#1 I'll take first poke at this, As was stated earlier, by someone else, to me to retire a players number, that player has to be soley identified as a member of that team. When you talk about Bobby Hull with a casual fan, that casual fan immediately thinks "Blackhawks." The guy also had to have had a real HoF career or set some major milestones in his career...or made a huge impact on the community and team.

#2 You're thinking Pete Rose here???? Think of it this way, if it was an embarrasment to the league/team, do you really want his number hanging? Very debatable issue.

#3 Yes.

He played most of his career in another jersey other than the Hawks.

Perhaps we should retire Bondra's jersey.

To qualify, the player must NOT have been a jackass.

All kidding aside, I would be okay with that.....although I really think everyone else here in DC may have a huge issue with it.

The point is that he played more years and games in another uniform. He is an NHL legend, NOT a Chicago Blackhawks legend. He also had more success elsewhere.

The Fuckwings should retire his sweater, not the Hawks.

We're also talking about a guy that put in a quarter century in the NHL overall, so 1/3 of his career is a career for most other players. I'm not saying that justifies anything, but consider it in your argument.

Response to Tater- being a jackass does not have any bearing on a team retiring your #. Bobby Hull's had a few moments.

This is just my silly mind thinking here:

I think Billy Reay should get a memorial banner. It can be half the size of the regular banners, and it could have his name, coaching years, victories, and a red fedora.

Bubble- Pete Rose is a jackass, but his contributions on the field cannot be denied. It's a damn shame he's not in the HOF. Put him in, and keep his lying ass off of a baseball diamond and dugout.

True. Perhaps that's the ***** of not playing your entire career or most of your career with one team. Perhaps you find those greener pastures (Chelios), perhaps not (Roenick). But the splintering of games played in multiple uniforms screws you out of this particular honor.

No...he played his most games as a Blackhawk. The only "more success" in the other places were the Cups.

w/MTL - 402gms - 309pts +74 - co-captain, 1 cup, 1 Norris Trophy

w/CHI - 664gms - 487pts +122 - captain, 1 cup appearance, 2 Norris Tropies

w/DET - 578gms - 152pts +154 (+88 in 2 seasons) - 2 cups

w/ATL - 7gms - 0pts -2

Other than the Cup wins (and the second one w/DET, he only played 14gms in the playoffs)...I think he played his best hockey while being a Blackhawk.

But the majority of his career was played in an enemy sweater. He is not thought of as a Blackhawk in most conversations because he isn't one. No one imagines Hull or Hall or Esposito in any other jersey but a Hawks jersey.

The prick is a fucking Red Wing and it's nauseating to think of his sweater up in the rafters with true Blackhawks legends.

By that logic how can he only be considered a Red Wing?
