As far as I know (or as long as I've actually paid attention) minor leagues have always used wooden bats. That's about five years or so now, before then I was mostly focused on the majors and didn't pay much attention.

Speaking of being a bit hypocritical considering how offended you were over a social group name here...

Offended? really? no I thought it was just dumb, more so by the creator for even thinking of something that stupid. not really offended but you can think that if it makes you feel better.

Nothey definitely used aluminum for eons. I know for sure they did as recently as seven years ago at Kane County

The Durham Bulls used wooden bats when I watched them over a decade ago. Might depend on the team, but as far as I can tell most levels use wood bats. I don't see why they'd develop pro players with aluminum and then switch them abruptly to wood. But I don't know that for sure.

I just did some googling and now I think I might remember my trip wrong though I could swear I told my wife to pay attention because of where our seats were and that they were using aluminum bats. Hmmmmm

Pretty sure it is the other way around. Better hitters equals more hard hit balls. If AAA players do get more errors, it is because they simply ate inferior tosh or league defenders. That said, Castro skipped AAA and was called up ironically as a defensive upgrade and had great fielding stats in the minors IIRC.

I agree the majors hit it harder. But the ball plays smoother because of field conditions. Easy to adjust to the speed on defense after some practice I would imagine as it is for anyone else that has gone thru that

I'm thinking the error totals go down not up when they hit the Bigs. The Jeter example given a few times on CCS (if true) would indicate that

Castros went the other way though, that's for sure. And most minor league fields I've been to are well-maintained.

I think it's more than looks. They just don't have the money to maintain it from pure bled to drainage that the majors do

Totally agree with Castro which should mean he should improve but money has a way of corrupting everyone. Self included.

What of money? Castro is making $500K this year (thereabouts). He knows if he improves in every facet of his game he has the potential to be a $15MM to $25MM per year player. The money is nice right now but he has more than enough incentive to improve so he gets more.

What's clear is that Castro has the range to play shortstop, any "smart" fan can see that. What is also clear is that he's young and needs to refine his fundamentals as well. As Bill James said, you have to be doing something right to be credited with an error in the first place, even if it's hit right at you. He's clearly doing something right in getting to the balls, he has to clean up his hands. I dunno if he can at 26 though.

Oh wait, he's 22? Why is everyone moving him off SS already? Is he hurting some imaginary competing team I'm unaware of?

Add to that he has one of the stronger arms in the league. He has the physical tools to be an above average defensive SS. That doesn't guarantee that he will be able to stay at the position, and I am willing to bet he is going to move at some point. The question though is he going to move at age 23 (highly doubtful) or age 33.

I dont think he ever be a gold glover. With his offense he just needs to be an AVG SS

I think they keep him at SS through his arbitration years to maintain his value to the organization and to increase his potential trade value, and if a better option comes along (whether in-house or free agent) then they move him. I think he has a shot to stick though as long as they keep working with him re: this concentration thing.

I could see him winning a gold glove since the award is as much about a player's bat as it is their glove. I don't think he will ever be an elite defensive shortsop, but he has the physical abilities of one (range and arm strength).
