I think they keep him at SS through his arbitration years to maintain his value to the organization and to increase his potential trade value, and if a better option comes along (whether in-house or free agent) then they move him. I think he has a shot to stick though as long as they keep working with him re: this concentration thing.

The only guys in house with a better glove have real questions about their ability to hit at the big league level (guys like Marco Hernadez and Elliot Soto) or have the bat to make the big leagues but probably will have to move off the position (Junior Lake and Javier Baez). If the Cubs don't feel like Darwin Barney is a better option at SS now then I doubt Castro is getting moved in the near future since they aren't signing anyone any time soon.

I could see him winning a gold glove since the award is as much about a player's bat as it is their glove. I don't think he will ever be an elite defensive shortsop, but he has the physical abilities of one (range and arm strength).

Very good point since people seem to look how good player hits over glove for glove glove. Makes alot sense dont it lol

I think he'll be good enough to tease for awhile. I don't think he turns into Cal Ripken out there, but his bat might play that way.

Furcal is a comparison I've made in the past and I think is apt. Furcal didn't break into the big leagues until he was 22, and he had seasons with 27 errors and a season of 31 errors.

What of money? Castro is making $500K this year (thereabouts). He knows if he improves in every facet of his game he has the potential to be a $15MM to $25MM per year player. The money is nice right now but he has more than enough incentive to improve so he gets more.

For a man coing from squaller it's a ton

Was Frucal a good fielder? No

He has played SS for over a decade, and the question that has been raised is when is Castro being moved off of the position.

Could it have been there was no better option? That's where he was comfortable d wise for his bat?

The point remains that some pretty smart baseball men decided that they could live Furcal's defense at SS, and Castro has a somewhat similar profile in defensive reputation (rocket arm, tendency to lose concentration, etc.).

Interesting read.

“They both are lining up in the right places more consistently,” Listach said, referring to cutoff plays and throws on steal attempts. “We worked on it last year, and they still were lining up in the wrong place. This year they are much better, but it is still a work in progress for both of them. One is 22 years old [Castro], the other is learning a new position.”
