I’ve said before I think they miss out on Ben Johnson. Vrabel is my top choice. He can command the room and serve as a stabilizing presence at the top. Kevin Stefanski is up there for me too, if the Browns let him go.

I would like to see Brown play a major role on the staff, though. He and Caleb seem to have a good rhythm going on.

The Swr
The Sewell trick play was a low risk situation on a 1st down of the opening 15-play, 8-minute drive that they still scored a field goal on. And then they also scored on 4 of the next 5 drives, with the 5th being a couple yards away from another easy touchdown when Gibbs coughed it up.

And yes, they have a dominant Oline, but a lot of those guys had been there for years before he took over, and it's only now the Lions have been top 5 in yards and points for 3 consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1950s (a time when there were only 12 teams). They were ranked in the bottom half of the league for 4 consecutive seasons before he took over.

This is not one-hit wonder kind of success from an OC, this is him running one of the top offenses in football for multiple years. He will be the top candidate of the off season and the Bears should be the ones getting first dibs on him before another team doe
The Sewell play was dumb. You can’t use the argument that they scored on the next several drives unless Johnson has the ability to see the future. So dumb lol

Shanahan is a game changer I’d do anything to get him including giving up a 1st (2026).
I'm rooting against the Niners hard now and hoping they feel forced to fire him.

Matt Nagy ran similar trick plays in KC before being hired by the bears. Remember how those trick plays worked out in Chicago?

I'm cautious of any OC who gets to work with the best offense in football. Thomas Brown, on the other hand, has turned around and anemic offense that went roughly 30 drives without a TD and has Mike Tomlin vibes.

The only problem is that Poles is the one who is going to make this hire.

That doesn't provide anyone here with confidence.

We are all pretty used to that...the no confidence part.
I actually am confident Ryan Poles can make a wise decision because, this time, he will have the power and authority to do so.

Think it's Kingsbury cause of the Caleb connection.

Don't 100% agree with it but it makes the most sense.
You gotta remember CW also has a Brown connection right now. With this front office all these hot names may just say no, and either stay where they are at or look for more stable ownership.

One thing is calling offensive plays. Other thing is being capable to handle every task a head coach has. I’m not saying he isn’t capable. But we don’t know. But that goes for anyone. We have to take a risk. But we take a calculated risk with interviews, to find out how much a candidate knows and what he brings. Time will tell if he’s a good candidate.
This is very true and one major thing that whoever you get is an unknown. We have to get a guy that focuses on short passing and builds on what Caleb and the OLine are “currently” capable of producing. Detroit has one of the most solid OLines in the league as well as a very balanced running game. A guy like Swift would flourish under a solid OLine.

You know skinny Fred Drust aka Lefluer was Vrabels OC? Why can’t he find a good Oc?

Who the hell was BJ before Campbell hired him?
Fact is though Cambell did not bring in Johnson to be the OC.

Obviously we can chip in and again buy Gruden a fruit basket to have him come, just in case everyone else turns down the job. Just make sure Brown stays, wouldn't want to break up this explosive offense.

I’m not trading a 1st round pick for any coach
Shanahan is highly overrated on top of it. Dude has blown more double digits leads than anyone

I would absolutely bring Johnson in to interview. And for the exact reasons you say.

Part of me remembers too well hiring Getsy away from Green Bay, and now our division rival had several years of practice against the offense run by our new coach. It felt like they always knew what he would call. That may be an irrational reaction, because it seemed everyone knew what he would call, but damn it if I can't dismiss the thought.
Getsy was exactly the type of coach i didn’t want. Didn’t have any playcalling experience but also was just a ball boy for Rodgers and LeFleur.

I get your worry but I don’t think it was a matter of the North being familiar with him, it’s more so that he just wasn’t creative enough. What was to really be familiar with anyways when it wasn’t his offense they were running? Dude just sucked, which is why he was fired twice in less than a year.

Hopefully they get lucky.

Let’s hear your prediction then. Is Ben Johnson going to be Matt Nagy esque? Put it down now so I can bookmark and laugh at you when you’re inevitably wrong like you always are.

You seem confused. I dont care to make predictions. If it is Johnson then I will give him 2-3 years to prove himself. I do have the following concerns about him though.

1. He seems to be more of a beta. For as good as the offense has been it is telling his players didnt rank him higher especially when thry had Glenn as the No 1 DC and Shipp ad the No 4 ST coach. So it seems he may be a good Xs and Os guy but not someone that inspires players.

2. He is rumored to want 5-6 years and something like 8-10 million. That is a lot for someone with no prior experience especially if Bears are eating 2 years of Flus.

“I think Ben is going to be very selective in where he wants to go. Every spot does not appeal to him, let’s just be honest about that. I’ve heard some things about not wanting to go to a larger market, he’s a little bit more of an introvert. I think he’s really going to be very selective in the spots he looks at. I don’t think he’s interested in all the openings. There’s definitely a chance he stays. He loves what he’s doing, he loves where he’s at…I don’t think it would be completely insane if he stays in Detroit.”

Why reply then? This thread is not a prediction on if he would sign here, so this type of discussion is off topic. The topic is of HC candidates is Ben Johnson the best.

I think he is 🤷🏻‍♂️
