The problem with the caps is semin is lazy. Backstrom disappeared during the playoffs didnt he? Your captain or coach needs to light a fire under your ass. I cant say for certain but it doesnt seem like Ovie has that "come'on boys lets go win this" mentality more of a "I have to go win this"

Toews on the other hand is a team motivator, those guys player better because of him. I dont watch enough caps hockey but I can say this for the hawks. There is no question whose team that is

Some guys are not going to respond to a good coach nor a good captain...some guys are not good team players.

Toews is affective because the Hawks have the right mix of players around him!

Put the wrong mix around Toews and his affect would be non existent! Toews would end up trying to do everything himself just as Ovie is doing with the wrong mix!

I disagree with that 100%.

Toews makes the players around him better. Without him, even with all that talent, they don't play well at all.

I agree with you, Toews does make the players on the Hawks' team better because they have the right mix to go along with their great captain!

Otherwise what you are saying, the Hawks can put anyone with Toews and the Hawks would be winners. So basically they are wasting a lot of money, they should just spend to the cap floor with a team around Toews!

I see where you are going. Agree they are more talented around Toews than Ovechkin. That said Ovechkin does not make the players around him better, other than those maybe playing on his line because of the offensive machine he is.

Toews makes the "team" better.

I understand why you would choose Toews or Crosby first if you had to start a team. It is not the norm for above average scorers to have captain tendencies. But Ovie can't just be dismissed when it comes to a guy you would want to start your team with, you can always add a Dirk Graham later in that start up draft.

So my point is; you don't necessarily pass over Ovie because he is not captain material, you can always get a 2nd or 3rd line type player with great leadership qualities!

Dirk Graham was a leader. Probably one of my favorite Hawks ever.

I'd take Ovi on my team there are just several I'd chose before him. And I've already said I thought he was top 5 in the NHL.

Toews has the ability to will his team to win, it is awesome to watch you just see Toews get determined and the team follows his lead.

for the clutch portion of this thread. This is clutch. This is the shit legends are made of

Yup. Sopel is clutch.

Notice the 5 players on the ice on Kanes goal to tie that game? Does it get any prettier?

great its settled. Other than Toews lets trade whoever we have to to get Ovie. Problem solved. Cup doesn't leave the UC for the next 10 years.

All I'm saying is that its not fair to criticize Ovechkin as overrated or whatever in the playoffs when he doesnt have proven playoff performers like Kane or Sharp and leadership like Toews or Hossa or Seabrook or Keith or Ladd on his team. He's got none of those luxuries and they are luxuries in the salary cap era.

and a combo of poor management? Really they brought in Wideman at the trade deadline. Last thing the Caps needed was an offensive blueliner playing infront of an average (if that) goalkeeper and a team already full offensive weapons. That was an old school trade deadline lets make a small splash move that really didn't address any needs of the team. Not that Wideman isn't a good player for what he does. Just wasn't what I would say was an invaluable move. A guy like Campolli for the Caps would have made sense..much like it did for us.

Anyways that does go into the fact that Ovechkin really doesn't have the supporting team around him like you said. Put guys like Sharp and Toews and Keith and Seabrook with him? Cup possibilities probably increase. Not sure if that is the fault of the cap per say. Think that's management...and a little draft luck..and a whole lot of other variables including the cap. Cap is an easy scape goat though sometimes when the problem is actually poor management and managing for things other than winning cups. I do think the Caps are on the right road now..but they still are missing 2 role playing bodies in my mind. And they need not be a top 6 forward or a 1-4 blueliner. As I stated earlier (and apparently not everyone agrees) a guy like Brouwer will do wonders for that team. He is filling a hole. One great thing about Troy is when he isn't scoring goals at least the guy plays the other parts of the game pretty damn well...fucked up shoulder and all. Troy is going to be missed here. Won't be a deal breaker because he is gone but on some off nights he will be missed. Caps did well there...i think people will be surprised by what he adds.

Problem is as soon as we do that he will change his name to Ovechkinov and we all know what happens then

The caps' setup is great for the regular season but when defenses tighten up for the playoffs they just don't have a style that goes well in the playoffs

When the Cap's win, Ovechkin is deemed the hero. When they lose, he is the scapegoat.

Of course he isn't clutch when they lose, but when they win he's usually the hero. This argument is stupid, apparently Ovechkin has to win every single game in order to be deemed "clutch".

There are very few players in the world that can be as "clutch" as Crosby, Toews, Ovechkin, or Stamkos. VERY few players can show up in big games like those guys.

Without a supporting cast, teams just bully Ovechkin in the playoffs. The amazing thing is he still pumps his legs and if he gets one good opportunity hes going to bury it, unfortunately for him the Caps don't have anyone else to take the pressure off him and help him out. It's not easy to score when you have 3 players on your back. Every elimination game I've ever watched Ovechkin has made an impact, probably the hardest working player on the ice for both teams combined, unfortunately has never had any support.

Again, there are a handful of players in the world that can show up during the big games, Ovechkin is one of them, his team is not.

Fixed it for ya.

Seriously Stamkos at this point in his career is terribly overrated.

Here is Ovechkins stats in Playoff elimination games:

4GP | 3G | 4A

1.75 PPG

Sorry if that's not "clutch" I don't know wtf more he can do. 7 points in 4 games.

Let me grab Crosby's stats in elimination games real quick:

11GP | 5G | 8A

1.18 PPG

Wow, 2 more goals in 7 more games. So much more clutch! I'm pretty sure this ends the argument.

I can't say I disagree, St. Louis is a fantastic performer as well.
