England started well. I don't know what happened in that second half. England did miss plenty of good opportunities..especially the one that Kane had with the keeper one on one

Think in soccer, teams have a tendency to go away from what gave them the lead. Belgium did it to some extent against Brazil and barely survived the ensuing onslaught and England did it here. Once the 2nd half started they switched to playing deeper and soaking up pressure whereas in the first half they were playing a more possession based style and had their centre backs playing a higher line to try and get the ball back quickly when they lost it.

So the United States can't even qualify, yet a country smaller in size and population than Indiana not only qualifies, but advances to the title game. Damn we suck.

Many countries who value futbol much more than the US did not qualify.

Not to mention that any naturalized citizen can play for a World Cup national team. That is one of the things I find to be cheap about it and its widespread in European countries.

you realize that the USA takes advantage of that as well, right? Freddy Adu, Fabian Johnson, Julian Green, etc...

France is notorious for doing that though. Just look at the majority of their roster

Most of the African players were born in France and are naturally French. France has a huge colonial influence in Northern and Western Africa.

Sucks for this guy...

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2018/07/cr...e-refused-roast-fans-reaction-world-cup-final

Striker Nikola Kalinic was sent home back in June after he refused to come on as a substitute late in the opening group stage match against Nigeria. Manager Zlatko Dalic said that Kalinic’s reluctance to enter matches and participate in training was a recurring issue, so he needed players who were fit for World Cup action.

The decision forced Kalinic to watch the surprising run to the World Cup final from home, and now, soccer fans have essentially declared Kalinic the unluckiest player from this World Cup.

You seem to believe for some reason that I am biased to any country at all. I am not. That was a blanket statement period. ALL countries included. Its bullshit.

**** em. The shithead didn't deserve any of the glory and I am glad Croatia has made it this far. He will be the laughingstock of his country if they win the cup. Will never live it down.

I wasn't accusing you of being biased. I was just stating that the USA does it as well. Lots of countries do this. I don't really find it to be a problem to be honest. If a kid is born in Cameroon but at the age of 5, he moves to France. Grows up in France and plays for all the youth French teams, I don't really expect him to go back and play for Cameroon

Hey that is fine. No one is stopping him from being a professional soccer player. You just then wouldn't be able to play the World Cup for that country. The entire grandeur and fanfare of the World Cup, to me at least, is to feature your country's talent. That cheapens it, again, to me. No one has to agree with me. Its just my opinion.

Yeah if a player is an immigrant to the country since youth that's fine, but if he defects to a country just to play in the WC or the Olympics that's a whole different story.
The S. Korean ice hockey team has white players who can't even speak Korean. That sort of defeats the whole purpose...

I think Mexico has 6 Brazilian players that couldn't make the cut on the BNT so they played for Mexico instead.

Think the immigrant thing is being exaggerated. The vast majority of guys are either born, raised, or played in the country they represent. The Dos Santos brothers for example were born in Mexico and have been playing for the Mexican National Team since they were teenagers. There is actually a decent sized Brazilian Diaspora in Mexico hence why they have a decent amount of people whose family may be Brazilian playing for the National Team. Furthermore, any naturalized citizen cannot play for a country. The rules are you can't have ever played for another country on the Senior team in anything other than a friendly.

So not sure who in particular people are complaining about as I really can't think of any naturalized citizen that didn't have a nexus to the country they ended up playing for. The most recent I can think of is perhaps Diego Costa born in Brazil who played a friendly for the Senior team but then requested to play for Spain. However, in that case, that was after he spent nearly a decade playing in Spain so it was less the case of him being a mercenary and more a case that he felt that was his home now. Further, Brazil actually had a need for a number 9 at the time so not even like he wasn't going to play for them.

If naturalized citizens can vote in a country not sure why they shouldn't be able to play on the National again.

Here is a good chart. https://qz.com/1304644/world-cup-2018-the-teams-with-the-most-foreign-born-players/
Surprised to see that Morocco is actually the team with the most foreign born players. Of their squad of 23, 17 are foreign born(12 from France). I would have guessed a France or England...but as Bearmick pointed out many of the players on the European teams were born in the land of the team they represent. Obviously this will not stop my African friends from rooting for France as they think France has the most talented African players in the world cup.

Yep, also proves the point that all the alleged Brazilians in Mexico's team were actually born in Mexico. People just have a tendency to imagine what someone for a certain country is suppose to look like and then just assume anyone that doesn't fit that profile wasn't born there.

Also Morocco makes perfect sense as they are a former French colony so they have a lot of Moroccans that grew up in France but identify with the country of their ethnicity. Fairly common particularly if they are also Muslim.

There was a huge shortage of labour in Europe after the war, and they had pretty open borders to Africans and Muslims coming to fill jobs, particularly in the 60s and 70s. Eventually of course, there was backlash, but there are many who stayed and became naturalized, and their offspring are citizens of these countries, natives so to speak.

The last world cup final blowout was 98 with France/Brazil. France's coach played on that team.
