Hawks still looking for defensive help

February, 25, 2011 Feb 25 11:13 AM CT By Jesse Rogers The NHL trade deadline is just days away and the Chicago Blackhawks are still looking for a defenseman. As previously reported, the Hawks have interest in Colorado’s Matt Hunwick, Edmonton’s Ladislav Smid, and Buffalo’s Steve Montador. League sources confirm the Hawks are looking at two other defensemen, including Tampa Bay’s Brett Clark.

The Hawks had interest in Boston’s Mark Stuart before he was traded to Atlanta.

Buffalo’s Craig Rivet has entered the picture as well now that he’s going through the re-entry waiver process. With a salary cap hit of $2.6 million, he was too pricey for the Hawks. Through re-entry, he can be had for half that amount which fits into the Hawks’ budget.

ESPN.com’s Pierre Lebrun is reporting Hawks defenseman Nick Boynton is on waivers which could further indicate general manager Stan Bowman is close to making a move. Sending Boynton out would clear some extra space for a new acquisition.

All reported players, except for Clark, have expiring contracts and have salary cap hits between approximately $1 million and $1.5, believed to be within the Hawks’ budget. Clark is signed through next year for $1.3 million with a cap hit of $1.5 million.

The deadline for making trades is 2 p.m. CT on Monday.

HAHA it's so simple, why hasn't anyone here figured all this out...

Chicago Blackhawks

The Problem: Last year's Stanley Cup champions are this year's playoff bubble team -- in 1,000 simulations they missed the postseason as often as they made it. In reality, they're far better than either their record or these forecasts indicate, being a top-five team at both ends of the ice and blessed with the league's second-best power play. The Blackhawks could stand to improve both their goaltending and their penalty-killing, but they're classic victims of the salary-cap era, forced to shed their admirably collected arsenal of young talent in the offseason without the cap space to significantly improve their roster.

2.6

Hejda GVT The Fix: The Hawks need to kill two birds with one stone by clearing cap space and getting the talent they need for the postseason by moving Brian Campbell and his $7.1 million cap hit (for five more seasons after this). In the short term, Chicago may prefer keeping Campbell and making only minor cosmetic changes, but moving his hefty contract could give it more flexibility in the offseason to work toward the club's long-term health.

Though a divisional rival, Columbus makes a natural trading partner because it has both the need and the cap space for someone like Campbell. In return, the Hawks could pick up a cost-effective penalty-killing defenseman like Jan Hejda, a UFA who carries just a $2 million cap hit. Though he's struggling this year, the more advanced statistical metrics have quietly and consistently ranked Hejda as one of the league's best defensive blueliners for years.

Moving Campbell also gives Chicago the cap room to end the deal in a number of suitable ways. For instance, they could include Mathieu Garon if they plan to dump backup goalie Marty Turco on someone else, or perhaps include reliable UFA veterans like Ethan Moreau or Chris Clark to help them win now; maybe even a prospect that has fallen out of favor to help replenish the Hawks long-term, like Nikita Filatov, who can help them win later. Any which way you slice it, the only way to improve this team significantly would be to find a taker for Campbell.

It's 3.5 per capgeek. Factor in Boynton, cap availabilty, and half salary on waivers and the Hawks are very close to have space for Rivet.

Has hardly played at all this year. Does he have any game left? Will they have enough Cap space for Leddy to return?

You should have enough for Leddy. We'll see if he has game left if he's the one. I'm torn but anyone is better than Boynton!

I think they'll be perfectly - like not a dime to spare - with waiving Boynton and if they pick up Rivet

Great move if Scooter is doing this.

Commodore is also on re-entry.

Rivet or Commie would be worth the risk IMO.

Anyone give me an idea of who and what Rivet is? I don't really follow much outside the hawks. I know the name and remember seeing him a bit on the ice when he plays the hawks, but that's about it.

Stay at home D man. Older player. Would just be a replacement for Boynton/Hendry. More physical, can do PK....

Not a huge move no matter who they get. Ultimately they are basically replacing Sopel here.

sooo... how much of an upgrade can we expect over boyton then... if on a scale of 1-10 boynton was about a 4... are we talking upto a 5... or maybe a 6-7?

Boyton was a 2 in my book. I believe at one point Rivet was the Captain. I could be wrong on that though.

He'd be a serious upgrade to either Hendry or Boyton in my book.

He can play on the PK which would help a ton since the 1-4 dmen are just getting buried in the time.

hopefully that would give the Hawks D some more punch in the game.

If we couldn't afford Sopel, then what makes anyone think we can afford Rivet?
