Again, what does that achieve? If MassHavoc is correct in that this suspension, whatever it may be, might be considerably detrimental to that player over when he's called up, doesn't that make more a difference than anything a player trying to punch him might do, which would also then implicate yet another member of the Hawks to that same hit? It's an action in futility. You only end up hurting yourself, sometimes literally.

In a rare moment, I agree with STU..

If Brouwer was on the ice, I believe he gets to Smith. Versteeg doesn't waste time in dropping them vs Mitchell. I believe Carcillo, Scott, Mayers all get to Smith if on the ice or as close to him as Bickell was. Scrambled brain Eager and slow fisted Burish or the big headed Dowell as well.

I don't think its alot to ask a 6'4 225lb Bickell to show some level of aggressiveness on the ice - for a suspendible hit on a promising/smaller rookie.

If a Hawk player hits does a cheap hit, I expect the same . It shows team toughness at times and preseason is as good as any to start. When Hjarlmarsson hit Pommiville, the Sabres didn't wait to get to him - and multiple players went at him/took shots.

And funny thing in the Hjarlmarrson hit - Connelly, who's more injury and concussed proned than Bolland, jumps Hjarlmarsson first.

Yeah that has to be looked at and also the severity of the injury of the player who endured the hit in regards to the severity of the discipline to the offending player definitely has to be thrown out, if that plays anything at all into the decision. That shouldn't matter at all, not at all. Just because someone may get lucky and not get say, a concussion, or a broken nose or whatever from a dirty hit shouldn't lessen the penalty for the offender. Like if Ben Smith somehow doesn't have a concussion or really anything wrong with him from this hit, that shouldn't mean the penalty is any less severe for Braden Smith. That's bullshit logic. He may not have gotten hurt from the hit, but the fucking guy still tried to take his head off. 4 or 5 games still seems way too low for this, first time or not.

Agree 100%. It's a change that has been due for a very long time. NHL paradigm shift time ala Shanny.

Watching the replay I don't see anyone BUT Bolland that had a clean shot. Maybe i'm missing something here. Unfortunatley the Wangs had NO star players and or very few starters last night.

Who's going to fight after the fact?

Shame Mayers didn't jump off the bench and make a B line right towards him.

and most of the time I agree with you and I do here BUT Bolland was the only one that had a legit shot at him and NO way is he fighting.

Not happening. Bickell has TWO wangs on him. Not just Helm.

If it ain't in him, it just ain't in him. You can wish and think he should of because of his size, is just wishful thinking. And just because he is 6'4 225lb does not mean he can fight, some guys are just softies no matter the size.

And hopefully his teammates took notice and will handle it with him!

edit: and obviously Bickell does not understand his ability and think he would hurt the team if he were to get suspended! Now if it were me and I understood my team could do with out me for 5 games because I am not a top six and I know I disappear every once in awhile, I would have ran through the officials to get him....that just me!

I bet my namesake with his 50 goals on his back would have went through every official and the whole Red Wing team to get him!

Shanny called him in for a face-to-face hearing, which means he can get more than 5 games when that happens.

Wings decided to do it via conference call/waiving that right....so I guess 5+ is on the table for it.

Still really curious to see how Shanahan handles his old boss/cronies.

Such a vague term. Where did all the "team toughness" get Buffalo, in comparison to the Blackhawks, who I am assuming according to you, don't seem to have as much "team toughness". A point less in the standings and a 7 game first round exit.

And I don't see why anyone would think that Shanahan (who had 2489 PIMs in 1524 games) would suspend anyone for instigating. He's played the game and that role which a lot of people don't remember. He can see the happy medium of players policing the games themselves and having the league step in. After a dirty hit... unless someone directly violates a rule, like Jacques did, there is no way in hell he is going to suspend someone for fighting.

This is what you do for your teammates:

Brouwer sticking up for Kane.

Versteeg getting into a fight with Mitchell after a CLEAN hit.

Dude why did you have to show us that Kane video??? Now I just want to beat the **** out of the announcers from BJ land. Forget about what Stralman did, those two shit for brain yapping heads are motherfucking morons and deserve a goddamn beat down! "Stralman's not a fighter...waaaaaaa...someone should save his knee on knee hitting ***** ass....waaaaaa.....my pussy hurts....." then "oh his knee was in the middle seeeeeeeee, he didn't really mean to knee him seeeee, that wasn't dirty seeeee" STFU you idiots!

Your name sake played the game in a different ERA. This NHL is not that NHL. Maybe you've missed that. Your name sake

Because that's his job and that's the dumb ass rule they created. To stop what you are trying to do.

Would Graham have gone after him, you bet your ass. Different era, different time. Grimson were you alive then?

Ben knew that Wang Smith was there...so I don't consider it a "blindside" hit

Ben made a move - into a dangerous part of the ice. It's high risk and you know you're going to get hit there, or have to make an elusive move to avoid it

Wang Smith knows - he must get a piece of Ben - with the BODY, and cannot play the puck. It's toast, if a Dman does that, and every single on knows that, is taught that from peewee on.

Ben made an elusive move to get around, and Wang Smith leaned/lunged to get a piece of him. Being taller/bigger, the recipe for shoulder to head was perfect height. You can't hit a guy in the chest when you're 6in taller than them. The extension of the elbow was late/follow through and looked worse, but it was shoulder to head. I don't think it was intentional to target the head - but the head was hit cleanly.

That's the responsibility of the defender or the consious effort they are trying to remove from the game. I think a 4-5 game suspension is suitable, for a 'first time offender'. It will be interesting to see how Shanny handles Wang suspensions, or any of the teams he has relationships with - Holland, Lamriello, etc

Good to see Bickell - the biggest guy on the ice, go after Wang Smith for that. He was right in the play and should've jumped Wang Smith.

Also, it was good to see Foley in mid-season form, missing calls, names, etc.

Perfectly said.

"you two" is very vague. Who exactly are you referring to? If you're talking about me... well I'd have to be wrong first, to admit I was wrong. When is Haley's comet due again?

RK, I get the game is different...what I am saying is Bickell has to go berserk and go after the Wing's Smith. First of all it is a pre-season game, secondly it was 15 mins left in game, so he gets a instigator and gets thrown out of that game and no automatic suspension for instigating. And if Shanny did give him supplemental punishment for a couple of games...so what...he's freak'n Bryan Bickell! Guys like Bickell has to understand a couple of games without him will not hurt, you pick your spots and understand where you are in the season and do what has to be done! He has already been called into the office by the coach to pick his game up...what better way to get in good graces with the team! Bickell gets stupid penalties in games any way...he just as well take a penalty that is worth it for the team!
