I think Bickell is the closest in size ... 6'4" 224.

i dont think he as the skillset of buff imo.

Agreed, but he's very early in his career, so he's got time.

I also agree with you that losing a guy who was dynamite in the playoffs will hurt ... but I think the Hawks will find someone to fill that role.

I have a lot of faith in Brouwer to do that. Not quite as big, but when he was paired up with Toews and Kane last season, he played very well. Granted, he didn't do so well in the postseason, but I think a lot of that has to do with his father being gravely ill in a hospital. Can't imagine how you're supposed to play through that.

Brouwer did score twice in Game 1 of the SCF, too ....

Why? Hate it or not, Steeger has more skill than Buff.

Sorry.

Steeger has an incredible amount of skill, but it's so goddam frustrating to watch him skate into the zone and dangle the puck right into the opponents' hands.

If he'd just shoot the damn puck more often, he'd be great. His wrister is outstanding.

And Steeger's more skill is far easier replaceable than Byfuglien's.

And I know, because of the playoffs, Byfuglien's value is higher than Versteeg, so we should try to get as much as we can because someone has to go.

It's going to suck for Atlanta when they don't make the playoffs.

Buff needs to show up in the regular season not just the playoffs.

It doesn't matter now though as he won't sniff em in Atlanta.

Playoffs is all that matters. Ya don't see "History will be Made" commercials for the regular season, do you?

Byfuglien was an asset because of his size combined with his decent hands, but look at him from an honest perspective. He is lazy a lot of the time and slow on the forecheck. A lot of his production was because he got to sit in front of the net while lining with two of the most talented players in the NHL. Troy Brouwer had good regular season production for the same reasons, and Bryan Bickell looked good during parts of the season as well playing with those two.

Now there is no one that will have the same size Dustin has but really we will get production from almost anyone that is playing with Tazer and Kaner, it really can be a plug and play position.

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if the Steeg/Buf debate was over with.

Maybe he'll get a sniff again when the Thrash play in another country...

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if the Steeg/Buf debate was over with.

Versteeg is a far better defensive forward, quicker on the forecheck and is actually willing to backcheck. Versteeg has a nice perimeter shot and makes better passes. Between the two Versteeg would be harder to replace.

I am still not sold that Steeger will be a Hawk next season, Mathis Olimb has a good chance to make the team and either fill the 4th line center or play Versteeg's role on Bolland's line.

I only say this because Versteeg bring lots of trade value and cap space is still needed (keep in mind Niemi and Hjalmarsson still don't have contracts).

I'm with ya, I still expect Steeg to have his ticket punched out of here as well. I think I'll stop with the Steeger/Byfuglien stuff. I've even referenced a horrible 80s hair metal band regarding the debate and it's been discussed in various places here and many of us disagree to the extent of which they are replaceable and by whom.

I hope we can agree on this, though: the fact of the matter is, we take an immediate step back with this trade, but c'est la vie in a salary cap world. Make these picks worthwhile so we can fall into this same trap years down the line, please.
