The Padres would have to include a lot int he deal to get Garza. By getting Alonso they basically shot their Rizzo trade leverage in the foot for the most part.

I doubt Theo would be very interested in the deal but he'd be wanting a lot of pitching back(or at least I would) because the Cubs minors is pretty pitching thin and giving away your best starter for a prospect position player doesn't seem like a great option.

Agreed, outside of McNutt do we have a single pitcher worth note in the minor leagues?

I would prefer to get 2-3 AAA pitching prospects back.

I really don't like McNutt that much...but Some people really like Dolis. Carpenter was decently regarded. Jay Jackson is awful IMO. Hayden Simpson?..........then.................ehhh...

McNutt, if makes major, is a 4th or 5th starter. Maybe the pen is in his future, he has a hard time staying healthy. I did like him, but I fell away a little. I like Dolis, but he's either a a closer a set-up in the future - to just a relief pitcher. I like Carpetner in the pen and will probably make club out of spring training. JJ was pitching pretty good, but now seems to suck. Maybe he can turn around, but I have a hard time seeing that right now.

Hayden Simpspn lol. Don't even mention him. He had trouble pitching in Boise and had to go back to the AZL. Yeah good like with that...

If the Cubs can get Rizzo and Kelly in the deal, then maybe... But not likely since a 3rd team will have to get involved to give up the 'spects.

Right now, I don't see Garza going anywhere.

Simpson was coming off of mono last season so I don't really care what his stat line said last year. I'm not incredibly sold on the kid but expecting much out of him after losing like 25lbs would be a stretch.

Jackson hasn't had a good season in the minors since 2009. He's been awful the last two seasons.

I'm not going to bother reading through this whole thread as of right now, but I would most certainly do this proposed trade, mainly because it does fit what theo wants to do. The rumored potential three way that was brought up on bleachernation looks nice also. But that one is more of a pipe dream. But maybe I'm way off base. I just feel this trade would help to establish this farm system and make it better now and for the long term.

Again I maybe completely off base, though I think after having done a bit of research, i would pull the trigger on this rumored trade for Rizzo regarding garza. As much as I do like Garza. It would suck to see him go, but it's whatever is best for the team in the short and long-term and by the time this team would be ready to compete Garza would be 30 (?) and commanding a huge payday.

That list hardly inspires confidence.

We need serious pitching prospects coming back in this deal so maybe a deal with the Rangers is better and we can get their talent rich pitching.

That was kind of my point.

Why would they focus on the Padres.

I would prefer to be talking to the Yankees where we could be looking at

C/1B Jesus Montero

and

RHP Dellin Betances

Both have been rumored to be connected to a Gio Gonzlalez deal.

If the Yanks wouldn't part with them for Gio, why would they for Garza? Plus the whole focusing on any one team is just straight up Special person. You take the best package you can get from any team.

It seems odd to me that we would bid on an expensive pitcher like Yu, and then try and trade a pitcher we have under control for 2 years.....

I'd prefer the 1st baseman since that's what the Cubs need the most in terms of position players.
