Ben Johnson signalled through the media that he wants stability and alignment with a GM. Bears are signalling back that if he brings his guy because he doesn't like Poles, they will play ball. The dance has begun.
It’s one thing to talk but another thing to actually play ball. Not saying it’s not true but I’m at the I’ll believe it when I see it mindset

Unless the new HC just hates Poles personality wise I see no reason why they would want Poles gone. Poles knows he has to give the coach the players he wants and if 2025 doesnt go as planned the new HC has an easy scapegoat in Poles.

Particularly if this will be my first time as HC, I would let Poles be my *****. The Shanny situation is different in that he was basically groomed to be a HC from since he was a kid and they were looking for a GM and HC at the same time.

The only candidate I see that I would expect to push for his own GM may be Vrabel.

You can't understand why a coach wouldn't want to be aligned with a gm with a similar mindset? You can't understand why a coach wouldn't want a new gm in his 2nd year who likely would want his own coach? You new to the nfl and how things work?

Oh, yeah, I want George wanting to learn and thinking he's more than just a fan so he can make even more decisions!
It's not an unreasonable expectation that the guy who is in charge knows a thing or two about a thing or two.

Dont ya think (Remy) that a new Gm who comes in will do everything he can for the new HC? Especially if they already have a relationship or similar mindset. There is no guarantee that Poles will be allowed to give everything to a new HC. Poles is clearly Warrens ***** right now.

If I was a new HC I wouldn’t be worried about scapegoats. I would be worried about having a GM that can provide me with a good roster to coach.

What do you want him to learn? Is there a “how to not be a shitty owner”’school or something?
Maybe it could help him to better adapt, which was a criticism we've seen about George in this very thread. Perhaps it means we don't get guys like Ernie Accorsi or Bill Polian giving suggestions?

I just want to know where he goes to get said knowledge? I think at this point he’s not going to learn

So what I understood from this writeup was:
- Bears already know who they want as HC
- But they will still interview many including Brown who they've already decided is not a serious candidate
- HC the Bears (not Poles) chooses has to want to work with Poles, or else Poles is out.
- Bears will screw up the GM search once again and we will be back to this exact scenario if new HC doesnt win in 3 years.

Welcome to the Bears!

Or to be around after my first year. New GM is gonna want new coach, most likely.
And that’s where things become difficult. Warren came out and said they will be going all in on a HC this season. So if you keep Poles and then fire him next year then you will have to find a GM who is 100% ok with the newly hired HC. They won’t get the of a HC they just went all in for. So much easier to just get the if Poles too

Think you missed the part where I said Poles will have to give the new HC whatever he wants ie they are aligned.

And the premise here is McCaskeys are willing to fire Poles if the HC demands it so no reason why the now 2nd year HC wouldnt get to pick his GM if Poles was instead fired after one year.

So unless Poles is a moron he should be telling the new HC he will get whatever he wants personnel wise which is pretty much what it seems Flus got.

Yeah for sure. It's kinda strange how tied the two positions have become in recent times. Like their jobs are somewhat connected, but also pretty different.

GM acquires the talent (with input from what schemes the coach is running)
HC implements the talent

Seems to me like you can judge them pretty independently so why are they so connected at the hip?
